We were visiting Port Huron from Lansing for a weekend trip and came into the shop on a whim after passing by the shop. And we’re so glad we did!
This has to be the coolest game store we’ve ever been in. Surprisingly good selection for what we’d have expected of Port Huron, but the real star of the show is the shop itself.
Beyond the sales floor, there are multiple rooms for playing games, painting minis, and so on. Every aspect of the shop’s design feels intentional - rooms are beautifully decorated and none of it feels extraneous. There’s plenty of space, yet it doesn’t feel empty anywhere. There’s plenty of seating, yet it doesn’t feel cramped in the least. Even the kitchen area had been converted into a space befitting the shop’s theme: Game of Thrones and other such specialty wine/liquor containers reminded us that no matter where we sat to play games, we were amongst fellow nerds.
On top of this, the shop did a lot of the small things right too. The prices of everything seemed very fair, often matching the prices I found on even Amazon. The shop as a whole was pristine, something I’m frankly not accustomed to in shops like this (particularly those with gameplay floors). There were two on-site unisex bathrooms, which was a huge plus in my eyes (gendered bathrooms as the only option always irritate me since my partner is non-binary). And the owner was so fun and pleasant to work with, another thing that sadly we’ve found is not universal across game shop owners.
We’ve been to a -lot- of game shops. From New York City, to Washington D.C., to Seattle, to most shops in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Some shops may have had more variety in games, some had more massive spaces, etc. But despite this, Border Keep is hands-down my favorite of any of them. The amazing aesthetic of the shop transports my inner nerd into a fantastic world instantly, and the immersion the shop offers can’t be beat...
Read moreVery cool gaming spot. Store owner was very helpful and proud of the store he was running. Offered a tour of the store. Looked small upon arrival, but gave way to more space as the tour continued. Cool location!!! Huge variety of miniatures (D&D, 40k, AoS, Star Wars, GoT, board games, card games (including the most recent MtG boosters and boxes). They admitted to having a limited knowledge of MtG, so i appreciated his openness. The store also has some local made items (range of prices). Had a big room with terrain and tables for miniature games. Also has a room that can be reserved for table top and RPG games (room has its own heating and cooling to enhance the experience). Clean bathrooms and another area dedicated for painting and modeling. Very warm environment, but I would recommend some street level signage (walked by it the first time). Store also has products available to demo and learn about. This store offers a lot to people looking for a gaming community in the Port Huron area. ...
Read moreWe have to stop at every gaming shop we find on our travels. Border keep was by far the best layout and concept for a gaming shop I've ever seen. They have a room you can reserve for D&D group, game Space where you can try out the new games before you buy them with lots of comfortable seating and tables for play. They also had all the paint supplies you could imagine! The owner gave me a tour and was just fabulous! I left my phone on the counter after paying and he came next door to the restaurant to give it to me. What a nice place and what a great guy! It's worth the trip to Port Huron just to experience this place if...
