It´s so handy for me as I travel/move all around to have a little bit of pawn shop 'inside knowledge'. Thanks Danny Kaiser. Danny was my wife's friend from high school. I met Danny years later when he was running the best pawn shop I've ever seen. Danny was subjected of course to my normal 1000 questions about his business over the years. He also told me all the unique and interesting things about his business. Because of all this it's really easy for me to look at the existing pawn shops in in any City and accurately tell you which one is the best. I moved to Portland in July of 2014. When looking at a new city's pawn shops, Size is a big tip off. Normally they will be big or have multiple locations in the area. A-1 Hawk fits both of those. Another tip is to look at their musical equipment and builders tools. Musicians & builders talk to each other about their local pawn shops. Both are looking for someone to work well with them, and also take their expensive equipment seriously. The main location of A-1 Hawk on Division in Portland is so huge and has an amazing selection on both instruments and tools. I already helped a friend buy a guitar from them. It's sweet and he loves it. I bought a special backpack at their other location, it was so nice I ended up selling it to someone who wouldn't leave me alone about it. I got the same price I had paid for it. In the five years I've been in Portland I pawned my guitar probably 10 times. Sure enough, as soon as they got used to me coming back for, they started to increase the money they would loan me for it. I expected this to happen. Austin and Peter are really cool dudes got me the right price and held an item for me to come get it the next day let me spin the wheel to get money off then the boss stephanie came and told them it's only a allow for purchases over 100$ despite not saying anywhere on the signs about this "rule" seems stupid to blow up a nice review and present experience over $10
