How can this bridge get a lower rating than Marquam?! The Ross Island Bridge is much more visually pleasing than the bland 1960s era Marquam Bridge. Gustav Lindenthal who designed the Hell Gate Bridge in New York City, also designed the Ross Island and it was built in 1926. The best way to appreciate the bridge is by boat or from Tillikum Crossing. Ross Island has a very beautiful arch design that jumps gracefully over the Willamette. Until about seven years ago, the bridge had a very faded greyish blue color but, was totally repainted (its first since 1965) and is now a nice dark blue. The nearest bridge upstream is the new(ish) Sellwood Bridge about two miles away. Give the Ross Island some love. It's a cantilever arch bridge which is rare for Oregon and deserves to be...

Avoid this bridge as a driving route during any hours of traffic:30. This bridge will be the southern most bridge in Portland (pdx) to see the August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse. This bridge was completed in the 1920's so please no unison running or marching in mass and competing with motor traffic. There are many historical homes in this area you might even currently live in one of them. If you find this helpful please...

Yes, you can go over it as a pedestrian or bicycle, but you would be insane to try. It is one of the most aggravating bridges during rush hour. The flow of traffic and lane merging onto the bridge is disastrous. It is a very necessary and (historically) functional bridge, but it severely needs to be modernized. Nothing is appealing about it in terms of looks either. It's...
