I was born in Mobile and lived here until 2009 when I left. At that point the 'purple gym' had taken over and Mobiles gym scene was effectively dead if you were into serious lifting.
I was visiting family this week and needed a gym to go to as I normally do heavy weight training 5 days a week and didn't want to screw up my rhythm and progress. I tried this gym out for a few days.
This is easily the best gym I've ever been in short of an athlete gym at a University. They have everything a regular gym has but dial it up to 11 for the weight trainers in the area.
They've got 3 racks complete with deadlift platforms and band pegs, as well as 8 rack stations that can also be used for Olympic lifts, Crossfit-style lifts, or just squats and deadlifts. They also use westside-style peg spacingfor hangers and arms making it easy to get everything dialed in right for a PR. There are tons of bumper plates all over the place too, they're not hidden. Like at other gyms. I think I counted 5 flat benches, 2 inclines, 1 seated press, and 1 decline as well as tons of hammer-strength machines for isolation exercises. Dumbells are the bumper type and go up to 125 many with 2.5lb increments.
Their price is incredible too, it's far less than what I pay for LA Fitness back home with triple the equipment. This gym rocks and I cannot recommend it highly enough. When I visit during the holidays I will...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI belonged to this gym from November 2021-May 2022, but when I cancelled my membership, I continued to be billed for 6 months. I finally got them to stop billing me after calling a different Club4 location, and they prompted me to some mysterious website that finally did the trick.
While the poor ethics of this are enough to justify my one-star review, there were other factors that ultimately made me choose Planet Fitness over Club4. For one, the locker rooms were continuously dirty. Pre-workout powder stained the carpets and dried piss covered the floors. In addition, many of the cardio machines were out of order without ever getting fixed. Say what you will about Planet Fitness, but the facilities are always clean, and the cardio machines are newer.
Lastly, the culture of the gymās members rubbed me the wrong way. I was asked to attend peopleās churches on multiple occasions. I also got strong influencer vibes here. Iād see ring lights in the locker room and sometimes people would film their workouts. Guys in the locker room would be posing loudly with their bros for Snapchat. This is that kind of gym.
On the positive side of things, I will say the staff was always very respectful and went out of their way to get to know me, which is why I feel guilty leaving this review. I just didnāt like many...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI really like the place. It has a great vibe. High ceilings ā nice equipment. Seemingly one of the best places in West Mobile and it gives you the convenience of being accessible 24hrs.
The only caveat is please understand your cancellation terms. They went through this part very quickly. Even though it is month-to-month, their cancellation terms require written notice to an address in Utah. While this should be a non-issue, I assume many people would infer they can cancel from the app or request a written confirmation of termination from the physical location ā which I donāt believe to be unreasonable. Itās the only part that gives me the sleazy vibe. Iāve attached the termination portion of my contract as well as pasted the verbiage below.
āFollowing the initial membership term, your membership agreement will automatically continue on a month-to-month basis until a 30-day advance written notice is given by either party. Buyer's notice must be sent to PEAK PAYMENT SOLUTIONS at the address below. Any additional service(s) will also continue monthly at their same rate(s) under the same requirement to provide a written notice of cancellation. All payments must be current to terminate the membership agreement. Buyer owes all monthly payments until proper cancellation procedures have...
