Our family of 5 enjoyed the Sunset bio bay tour with Capt. Nicole. We went out on a Sunday evening in April and were impressed with the experience. We spent some time watching the sunset from the Mangrove forest, snorkeling around the shallow waters, while the sun set. Then we headed over to the bioluminescent bay and waited a few minutes for the sky to darken. We spent a while in the bay, swimming and watching the microorganisms light up. The trip back was fun as they opened the throttle and we cruised back to La Parguera.
We would recommend Hook'd on Adventure as a great option to see the bio bay. They provide life jackets and have kid through adult sizes. They stock a small cooler aboard the boat with a few drinks. We were able to take our youngest who was three at the time of the tour out on the boat. The captain was very patient and kind with the kids which made our family's experience on the boat memorable and enjoyable. The night we went was very clear and we were able to do a bit of star gazing which was an added bonus since we live in an area with a lot of light pollution and do not get a chance to see many constellations from our backyard.
Some things to keep in mind when booking your adventure. The bio bay tours are done when the moon is new or slightly illuminated. Check the dates you hope to go with the moon phase and Hook'd on Adventure availability. Parking in town fills up at night. We parked 600 meters away from the dock in a parking lot next to Parque Rafael Cancel which was free. If you are traveling with small children I would suggest bringing something to eat with you. There are restaurants and food stands in the area but not many grab and go options. We thought we would arrive with time to pick up dinner and then go out on the water but finding a place to park and walking over to the area took longer than we expected. We had about half an hour before the tour got underway to find something to eat and stressing about whether your food will arrive in time is not a great way to start the tour. If you plan on trying to take pictures of the bay, be warned, it is very difficult to take photos which capture how cool the experience is. Long exposure times are necessary to capture the luminescence and the boat rocks enough to cause blurring. Certain smart phones are able to capture images but expect them to be cloudy.
We really enjoyed our sunset tour and it was a highlight of our trip to Puerto Rico. We would recommend Hook'd on Adventure to our friends or family as they enabled the highlight of our trip to...
Read moreI can say that without doubt this was by far the best experience we had while we were in Puerto Rico.
From the scheduling process, to the quick responses I got from the staff, this was a 5 star experience from beginning to end.
We joined Captain Nicole and cruised the mangrove islands that surround the area in la Parguera. They had provided us with a small cooler filled with Ice water and soft drinks. We were allowed to bring any snacks or drinks we wanted. I was able to purchase a six pack of Ice cold Medalla light 🍺 at their store just before heading out.
We spent just over 4 hours out on the water discovering great little mangroves islands such as isla Mata la gata and sand bars such as stick island. The water and scenery there is just pristine and beautiful. We felt safe the entire time and got a lot of history of the area from Captain Nicole. She made sure we were comfortable and would make suggestions as to where to go to and would always be trying to make us have the best experience possible.
I have a couple of tips for you if you plan on booking or scheduling with Hook’d on adventures.
If you see an open spot In Their calendar on their website and you are on the fence about booking it and want to try and look at other prices or charters ...DONT! I made the mistake of booking too late and having to go on a day I had not originally planned on but I’m glad I did so regardless! Just do it trust me! Support local family run businesses.
Bring water shoes and sun screen as the water is so enticing that you might forget to put on sunscreen like we did 😂 water shoes are for all the exploring you will want to do in and around the islistas. Some areas might be a bit rocky while others have really soft white sand. Added bonus was the excellent restaurant suggestion from our Captain! 😋
When I come back to PR, I am definitely coming back and doing it...
Read moreI had the most amazing night ever with Nicole during this tour. I was supposed to originally attend with a friend however she chose to do a different activity so I was alone. To my surprise when I got to the boat I saw that I was the only one on the tour that night! Instead of canceling Nicole graciously allowed me to continue with the tour and provided me with the best experience ever!
We started off at a small island, Caracoles where we were able to interact with other boaters who gathered at the shallow part of the water to watch the sunset. That part of the tour in itself was magical! Caracoles Island is fantastic and Nicole having grown up in the area was very knowledgeable about the land and how it had changed over the years and due to hurricanes and whatnot so I got to learn some things as I swam in the beauty.
Once it was pretty much near dark we took the boat over to the bioluminescent Bay which was like entering an enchanted forest or magical land from far ago. It was completely dark and the bioluminescent algae were very visible it was by far the most fantastic experience I've had! she let me know that this is the only place in Puerto Rico where you can actually swim with a bioluminescent algae and it was worth every bit. the water was very warm and the saltiness made a buoyant so it was easy to float so the night time swim wasn't so intimidating. and once you see the algae start to light up all your fears are going to go away anyway by the magical experience.
I'm very glad that I chose this tour to experience the bioluminescent Bay and you should absolutely book yourself a tour as well!
