Standing in the waiting room at the SMC ER about to have my 4 year old admitted for a cut on his tongue (ah the joys of a playground swing), I decided there must be a better option than hours of waiting and decided to ask Google who was nearby.
The closest option was MCMC and at first glance I saw a lot of stars from good reviews. With that as a good initial start, I called, explained to the nurse what my needs were and a few moments later Dr. Borris immediately had my confidence and his 30 years of experience were clearly on display.
The 2 preview care centers both wanted us to go to the ER so they could sedate and then get a good look at the cut likely to be followed by stitches. Based on my description however Dr. Borris assured me that was huge overkill and offered to take a look.
Less than 10 minutes away we signed in and were seen promptly. The staff was friendly and helpful.
The office does not feel like you just walked into the medical office version of the Taj Mahal (ie. If you want a marble floors and harps playing keep looking), but it was definitely clean and professional looking.
Dr. Borris's approach was a good balance of kind, but firm. It's hard to reason with a 4 year old in pain and I felt he did a great job with it.
Because of the obvious emotional trauma my little boy was refusing to let anyone look at his mouth and properly examine him. Dr. Borris spoke with him kindly and gently, but like removing a bandaid we needed to get this done quickly so I held him while the Dr. gently used a tongue suppressor to check his tongue and teeth.
As the Dr. expected the cut on his tongue, was while scary, would heal well on its own. In fact stitches would have made his recovery longer and harder.
Bottom line, if my family or I need medical assistance Dr. Borris and his team will be our first call. Further knowing that their focus is quality care with a eye toward good value is a huge plus in today's over-priced medical care world.
Put another way if you want the benefit of 30+ years of common sense medical care and advise you cannot go wrong.
UPDATE 1: Just as a follow-up, three years ago now and no problems for little guy.
UPDATE 2: Our little guy just had a munchkin to munchkin collision that got him a nice cut in his eyebrow. Poor guy had a rough one. Again my wife packaged him off to an urgent care that was just a bit closer to us than MCMC and first they did not accept kids (something new) and 2nd referred him to the ER.
I gently reminded my wife that Dr. Borris was our go to and sure enough as he removed the bandage we could see it was another , let it heal on its own issue.
Thanks again to the MCMC for saving me likely thousands of dollars over the years in wasted...
Read moreI came in because I had an infection going on. I paid out of pocket for my appointment.. Doctor came in, had me open my mouth, not even 2 seconds and she was done! She said, “You definitely have SOME TYPE of infection going on”. She did no swab, used no light to actually check my throat, barely got close enough to look inside my throat. She didn't even tell me what was actually wrong. I was very unwell that day and I didn’t even realize until I had left the office that I asked myself why I didn’t question the doctor. How can she prescribe antibiotics for 2 whole weeks without knowing what’s actually wrong. I took the antibiotics as she prescribed and as soon as I was finished all my symptoms came back. I called the office and they said I had to pay for another visit because it had been more than 7 days after my initial visit even though my antibiotics were to be taken for 2 weeks. How could I call before then, if antibiotics should be finished. How would I know there was a problem? I basically paid for a visit, walked out with no diagnosis, was blindly given antibiotics to resolve an issue she didn’t even diagnose to begin with and now Im sick again with the same symptoms. I have been to this office several times before with my husband and daughter and I had never had this sort of issue with other doctors. All the other doctors were more than helpful and the appointments didn’t feel like they were just trying to get us to leave, they were actually trying to help. This experience was far from that. This has honestly been a horrible experience for me because I paid and im back to where I was before....
Read moreI'm stunned that Robert Ruiz, the physician's assistant who refused to properly care for my son today is a licensed professional. He is extremely unprofessional, negligent in providing care and treats patients with hostility. My son went to an urgent care facility under which he works for treatment of a fever, sore throat and cough. He had already tested negative for COVID yet waited outside in the car while given another COVID test. This test further confirmed that he does not have COVID however he was still forced to wait outside in 95° heat and was not allowed into the facility. My son also had his temperature checked and it read 97.7°. This PA then asserted that the only reason he was sick is because he "was not given ibuprofen" and that it was our fault for not managing allergies. He refused to administer a strep test and then delayed finalizing the visit for well over an hour. After re-emerging, he first offered to provide z pack prescription and then said "actually nevermind" stormed off like a child and then came back with a coworker and stated that he would not administer any care or treatment and that we should go to the ER. So his stance went from "it's just allergies, take ibuprofen" to "go to the ER for a chest x-ray" without any reasoning other than his own resistance to provide treatment. He displayed gross negligence and should not be allowed anywhere...
