I recently went Christmas shopping with my mom at the Kohl's in Salem Downtown and had a rather disheartening encounter with the on-site manager on 11/29/23 around 8 pm. To provide some context, I had purchased 4 pairs of Under Armour shoes and one women's sweatshirt, totaling $197.98âjust $3.02 shy of $200.
During this visit, Kohl's had an ongoing promotion where, for every $50 spent, customers would receive a $10 voucher for future use. As the transaction had already been completed, the cashier needed approval from the manager for an after-transaction add-on to raise the total to $200 and receive an additional $10 in Kohl's Cash.
Unfortunately, the manager (whose name escapes me) proved to be dismissive and rude. He didn't allow me to fully explain the situation, and it felt like he had already made up his mind before I even spoke. Interestingly, I had a similar issue the same day at the Kohl's in Albany regarding a price adjustment to receive Kohl's Cash, and the staff there handled it without any issues.
Due to the manager's poor customer service skills and sub-par communication tactics, I have decided not to return to the Kohl's location in Salem. I must commend the other staff members, as they obviously received intensive and effective customer service training. In the end, I returned all my items and have opted to continue shopping online or at the Kohl's location in Albany.
In light of my encounter, I hope the management of the Kohl's location in Salem considers making it a priority to provide more stringent customer service training. This training should not only be for entry-level staff but also for management and supervisory staff. Consistent and effective training can significantly enhance the overall shopping experience for customers and ensure they feel valued and respected.
In the meantime, I'll be redirecting my shopping efforts to the Kohl's location in Albany or opting for...

After finding out that Kohlâs now accepts Amazon returns, I decided to give them a try instead of the normal print/pack/drop off/ship method Iâm used to. I was very pleased to find that they close at 11:00pm on Fridayâs, so I rushed out the door after a 13 hour work day, and made it there around 10:35. I was immediately, and kindly greeted by Melissa, with genuine kindness, and she was extremely helpful with navigating my way to the customer service desk upstairs. Once upstairs, Alex greeted me, as Iâm sure I looked like a deer in the headlights. âAmazon return?â, she kindly asked, I agreed, and she kindly directed me to Donna in customer service. Donna was prompt, answered all my questions, and processed my returns in a flash, then wished me a good evening, and issued me a 25% off coupon! Heading back downstairs, Melissa was attentive, and asked if my experience was easy. I assured her it was much more so than anticipated, then asked if she could assist me in finding a dress for an event this weekend. Without hesitation, even nearing 15 minutes until closing, she helped me select several flattering options that fit the bill, and I ended up purchasing 3 items even though I had no intention of shopping. Now at 10:58 and checking out, the coupon I was previously issued wouldnât validate, so Mark jumped right in to override the prompt, and honored it anyway! Overall, my experience with each associate I encountered couldnât have been more outstanding, I will highly recommend Kohlâs, and want to give special thanks to Melissa, Alex, Donna, and Mark for exceeding my expectations, and truly delivering a...
Read moreI want to be clear, the checker Saturn, deserves 5 stars, however the Assistant Manager made my shopping experience very uncomfortable. He followed me, very closely, thoughout the majority of my time in the store.
The initial interaction from him was a simple "How are you doing?" Yet his tone made me feel like I was doing something wrong; I said "fine" and kept shopping.
When I picked up a jacket that I wanted to purchase, he came up very quickly behind me and asked "What are you looking for?" To which I replied: "things I want to buy?"
He then stood about 5ft away and proceeded to pull a few associates over to him to talk and look in my direction; it very much felt like I was being targeted as a shoplifter.
In that moment, I just wanted out of the store and took the few items I had in hand to the counter to pay. I have been a Kohls member for many years, and this was the worst experience I have had in a Kohls.
While at the checkstand, he proceeded to stare at me with the other associates he called over, thus continuing to make me feel uncomfortable even as I was paying for my items.
This is where the checker, Saturn turned my experience around. They were incredibly welcoming and kind during the entire checkout process.
I honestly feel bad for anyone that has to work under his management. He lacks any customer service skills, and I don't understand who would have made this man an assistant manager.
I don't anticipate coming back to this store anytime soon, if there is a possibility of having to interact...
