Stokes Market Salem — Local services in Salem

Stokes is a great small town grocery store. Prices are higher than most grocery stores, but reasonable for small town. They do specials each weekend on produce and other items. Produce is good and selection and quality is impressive for being a small store. They also have a delicious bakery and deli. My kids love the donuts and chicken at the deli. I love that they offer artisan-style breads and baguettes. The sour dough isn't as good as my homemade, but when I'm in a pinch, theirs is an acceptable substitute. The produce manager is helpful and friendly and I love that they always get cases of berries in stock during spring and summer.

The older gentleman that helps with rain checks is adorable and so nice. I use to dread waiting on raincheck and now I don't mind because I get to chat with him (I wish I could remember his name). There is also an older gentleman customer that comes into the deli on Thursdays and eats with employees on break. I love supporting a business that has a personal, at-home feel.

I really hate to write this review, because I love the store & employees and they have great produce & meat at a good price. But although I have been a loyal shopper here for the 3 years that I've lived in this community, I can no longer support a business owner that openly defies a county-mandated mask mandate as well as the health and safety of his customers and employees. I understand that people have their own opinions about masks, but cases are spiking in our state and county, the science shows that they work & the county health department has mandated them which means that he should comply whatever his personal opinion is. Unfortunately, because this is the only grocery store in Utah county not requiring masks, all the anti-maskers seem to be congregating here. This is also a hang-out for the local JH & HS that are nearby and those 2 schools have the highest COVID rates in our school district. I feel that the owner is being extremely selfish and irresponsible. Of course if he changes his mind I'd be happy to change my review...

I shop at Stokes because it is convenient and really no other reason, certainly not the prices and while I am here, not the bakery, which used to be the main reason I frequented the store. I am posting this to complain about the Christmas rush. So many people were shopping which is to be expected and one would think the management would be equipped to handle the lines of shoppers, yet as we waited in line everyone could see the dark haired woman (manager?) Sitting on her rear end! My experience with the best management are those who can and are willing to do the most menial jobs in order to help the employees and make a better experience for the customer. I was appalled at her ability to just sit there with no care in the world while we waited and waited for checkout. I am sure Miss Manager feels entitled and probably makes very good money to sit on her derriere but is oblivious to needs of the customer. Perhaps I am being harsh and she has just never been trained...
