First off, IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING A NURSE, GO TO THE ALAMO COLLEGES FOR YOUR PRE-REQS!!!!!!!!!!! You are able to take the same exact classes for 1/3 of the cost. I had many friends who took their nursing pre reqs at Alamo colleges and turned out just fine. I really wish I had learned that lesson earlier. Don't let society fool you into believing community colleges are bad. Also, this school has SO MANY "pre-nursing" students but the university does such a poor job with us. My academic advisor had absolutely no clue how to help me, she signed me up for AIS my freshman year(which is a university-wide requirement for students who wish to graduate from UTSA) turns out, I didn't need that class at all as I had already told her I only came here to do my four semesters of pre-nursing classes. (so basically I had no plans on graduating from UTSA). Later on when I realized, I went on my own and dropped the AIS class (which was nothing but busy work).
They are admitting way too many students then what they are able to handle. The biology department is probably the worst about this. I remember one time they had maybe about 4 or 5 anatomy lectures opened up however, the lab that goes along with the lecture didn't even have enough sections to accommodate students in the lecture. So what that meant was you either hoped and prayed you could somehow get into a lab, or you had to wait an entire semester to take you lab. (there were probably close to 100+ students who were told too bad so sad.)
Going back to the outrageous number of students...the hallways were so packed you essentially had to lose all sense of personal space. Like seriously, you will be pushed around and ran into every time you're on floor 1 of the JPL or inside of the MS building.
There aren't enough food options for the amount of people here. Be prepared to wait in line for about 30 minutes if you want lunch, and then good luck trying to find a place to sit down and eat it.
For the MOST part people are friendly here. I experienced a lot of extremist groups on campus though. (I'm not political, but I noticed A LOT of anti-conservative groups/attitudes)
I really liked the professors at this university. I felt that they respected us as adults and always wanted the best for us. The Rec center was really nice, and I LOVED the group X classes they offered! :) Also I really enjoy being outside and UTSA has a lot of really nice outdoor study spots.
Ironically, Dr. Anita. Moss (you may know her from national headlines trying to perceive her as a racist.) was my favorite professor, she taught me anatomy for two semesters. She really was a very sweet lady. She DID have a hang-up about us putting our feet up on the chairs in front of us because she felt that it was not the right thing to do in our newly renovated lecture hall. I personally liked to put my feet up if there was no one in front of me however I understood and respected her for her commitment to keeping our campus looking nice and also for her commitment to our future. I had just left the school when the news came out that Dr. Moss was "racist" and I'm sorry but the students race had absolutely nothing to do with having the cops escort her out. Do I think it may have been an over-reaction on Dr. Moss's part yes, but again I feel VERY STRONGLY that Dr. Moss's decisions weren't made based off of the students race. The media painted the picture as if the student was peacefully sitting in class and without warning all of a sudden a racist white lady was escorting a black student out of the classroom because she was black...that simply is just not the way the story truly played out.
All in all, I wish Dr. Moss hadn't been framed as a racist on national headlines because I know that is not in line with her character, and I feel so sorry that she has been permanently dismissed from the university.
Dr. Moss's dismissal further contributed to the bad taste I already had in my mouth after...
Read moreFirst off, while UTSA is actually considered a great place to learn it is an institution that tries to indoctrinate students, squelch free speech, and doesn't practice what it preaches. Throughout the past two years I keep hearing the same things: -College education is too expensive -People's rights are being violated -And my personal favorite, the non-stop bashing of Trump Let's go through this, point-by-point: -UTSA's professors and faculty preach that a university education should be more affordable/free. That's all fine and dandy but maybe they shouldn't be charging $6 for a PB&J sandwich from the grab and go. Tuition rates keep rising, primarily going towards a failing football program and the expansion of the physical footprint of the campus. Parking rates are outrageous and only getting more expensive. The prices for parking wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for the lack of physical places to park. Also, as far as parking is concerned, I've noticed a DECREASE in disability parking located close to the university and they're being repurposed as either very expensive employee parking or reserved parking for "special guests". -UTSA spouts that it is an inclusive, safe campus. It's only safe and inclusive if you believe what they say that you should believe. If you don't, look out for warriors who will literally assault you. Students and organization are being harassed, squelched, doxed, and physically assaulted if they don't fall into the status-quo. It's hard to develop into an individual if the university allows its students to attack one another. -Finally... while I'm in no way the greatest fan of our current president, it's ridiculous that the university allows its faculty to openly criticize and attack Pres. Trump, and support student organizations who attack conservative and jewish groups throughout the university. It's ironic to say that Trump spews hate speech while you, yourself are attacking jewish students in the university. Educational institutions are suppose to teach HOW to think, not WHAT. Ideally, at the end of the day, your educational offspring will turn into fully-functional adults who will make contributions to society that will make the world a better place. I, as one student, can't change the way the university chooses to operate. I can, however, make a statement that should echo in the leadership's minds: Practise what you preach, and if you can't.......
Read moreThis by far is the worst University that I have been to. Transferred this spring from a community college (North West Vista) into CS at UTSA and I am surprised to say that UTSA is far below a community colleges here in SA.
First off, most classes are run by Teacher assistants or grad students. At times it hard to understand what is being said in the lectures and most of the time you end up not progressing that by the time it's time for an exam you rush through the material.
Parking close to campus is limited and you have to pay about $163 just to get a parking permit that last for that semester (and a few extra months if you take summer classes).
Due to the virus, UTSA attempted to go with an online approach which they took an extra week for spring break, but failed miserably. None of the professors from the same department were not on the same page. One class was run different from the others with utter confusion for students. classes were rushed and getting help for assignments was a nightmare because for me, my professor never answered any of my questions or concerns. I am not sure if the professor didn't want to answer me or if I was being discriminated.
Some professors end up not even using a book for the class and if you don't understand what is happening, then good luck. Be careful of which professors you use and use ratemyprofessor otherwise you will find yourself losing money because some professors set the class up so that you fail.
Thus I suggest avoiding this and going to a community college or different university. If you think that going to a university like UTSA because it is commonly known just know that whatever they teach comes from a book that someone else wrote. So even an underdog from a less known university can put another university like UTSA down. It all comes down to how determined you are and where you have the determination to seek knowledge that is publicly available to anyone not just a certain university.
Alas, avoid UTSA. I will not be coming back for another semester here and I most definitely will not be getting my bachelors...
