Homeless from home match. Placed with a hoarder after turning down multiple disgusting places. I began the process in December of 2024. It took 2 months for them to match me with someone who wound up stringing me along before cancelling. The other places I was matched with were so filthy, I remained homeless in order to find a clean place. After getting very sick while being homeless waiting for them, I was matched with a hoarder, who out of desperation I signed a lease with. I couldn't work for weeks and was late on paying rent, however the hoarding was such a safety and health hazard I moved out within 3 weeks of moving in, and am using the master tenant for my rent back. I was threatened with the police eviction from a home match agent, and harassed multiple times. This organization does not inspect the properties it matches people with. Apparently because we are down on our luck, we deserve to live in unsanitary dangerous conditions. This was even more disappointing as I really would just like staple housing and I cleared the entire backyard in an afternoon to make a garden. All that work for 3 weeks of dangerous living. There were clothing racks for almost a month in every single space of the house and I could not use any of the common areas. When I tried to bring this to their attention, no one cared. After filing a complaint with their director, I have been completely ghosted by home match. Attached is the squalor apparently they Believe poor people deserve to live in, along with the free yard work I did for a landlord Lord who yelled at me for dusting a truly filthy house. I write this still occasionally needing to sleep on the street, because being sick and waiting for months for housing from home match destroyed my savings, and honestly my trust. Save your money for some place on Facebook marketplace and don't let home match home match make promises, and threaten you with incorrect legal advicejust to leave you sick on...
Read moreHome Match and Karen Cappock are unconscionable. If you are looking for a home (not the home owner) do not use this "service". Here are a few reasons why you have everything to lose:
Home Match helps mainly the elderly stay in their homes by having someone help pay their mortgage or rent, and often the new tenant helps as a live-in assistant for fees that are not commensurate with current rates. It's owned by private companies.
As the renter, you have NO PROTECTIONS through the "contract". After just six weeks living here the eviction threats began when I was replacing long-dead plants with fresh flowers in a pot. Though I took the flowers out immediately, the elderly woman decided that I was taking over her home and called Karen from Home Match to say that she wanted me gone. Karen told me "She can evict you if you wear pink and she doesn't like it."
There are many more instances of yelling, swearing, and abuse that I told Karen about, yet she is now helping the abusive woman advertise and rent the room I'm leaving (and that I spent $1000 freshly painting and re-flooring. I also spent a week deep cleaning the common area that had not been cleaned in over 10 years.) Karen's unwillingness to have a reasonable amount of protection and care for the non-homeowners is why I'm writing this review.
Karen refuses to be transparent about the long, unclear process of applying to be a renter through Home Match, nor if you're approved, nor if there are any actual homes available...for years. Her catch phrase of "just fill out an application" is "just" the beginning of being jerked around. I filled out applications two years in a row, was never contacted once about a potential rental (keep in mind, this is supposedly for people that need a home!) Two years later I saw one of their listings on Facebook and reluctantly contacted them, hoping it would be a better experience,...
Read moreI have had a terrible experience with HomeMatch. I moved in back in January 2024 to a new place in SoMa, it was highly recommended to me. A lawyer with a wonderful apartment. Fast Forward October 2024 the lawyer didn't have a job, was a hoarder with a severe bedbug infestation that she had lied and concealed to me. HomeMatch moved in a third roommate during the infestation, it is unclear how transparent they were to him. Three months into this ordeal. HomeMatch has washed their hands. They vetted me carefully, financials background checks. It seems they don't do this to the hosts. Beware of this organization. They are out for grant money, not to really help people. It is incredible how they hide behind the facade of we are just conduit and sometimes the journey is long and hard. They do not vet their hosts, if they minimally did, they would have known .my host was completely unfit financially, morally. Do they even vet their hosts past roommates situation? They didn't in my case. When they don't get a match right, they won't even try to match you with another host. When they were informed by the third roommate in my household that the host made him lie to the pest control services saying it was me who brought the bedbug, after moving in they didn't care to inform me. They literally can give- i' m sorry two shits- about you at all. It is absolutely unbelievable how they later treat you. In one month and a half I have had three different people that never matched what the other said. When you press them for answers, they straight up ghost you. They truly don't care. You are just a number that's gets them more grant money and more salaries. This needs to be on the...
