IG: eatgosee There is a lot already said about this place in other reviews. Suffice to say that the hype is justified: there is so much to do here and on offer for people of all ages and backgrounds. It truly feels like the bustling social heart of San Francisco at the end of a long commercial area with a beautiful open panoramic view of the bay including the Bay Bridge. All cities should have this kind of a place available bringing people together and celebrating the best of local small producers.
HIGHLIGHTS: –Farmers market. There are multiple stands here available offering people everything from fresh vegetables to dips to honeys to meats and cheeses. This is reminiscent of many European village markets celebrating an offering multiple artists no small-scale produce farmers. You could easily come here together things for a picnic or a lunch and dinner to take back for a group of friends. If you are a foodie, definitely come to be inspired. It is also a very photogenic place for people like myself who enjoy simply coming by with a camera to soak in the atmosphere.
-Cooking stations. There is a truly wide and inclusive scope of food available here for sale notably a Jewish deli opposite an Iranians breakfast stand surrounded by Cali Mexican food offerings and beer tasting tents. You should come here and bring your appetite as well as a large (and very likely reusable) bag to take things back with you.
Restaurants. If you are looking for something a little more formal with an area to sit down at a table, there is plenty this available inside of the ferry building including a few popular local well-known restaurants in chains with views looking out both onto the market on one side and onto the bay on the other side.
–Child friendly. Given this is a wide open space,There is plenty of room for children to run around and for families to get together to enjoy picnics in the area. This all assumes that the weather is sunny and bright.
-Craftsman. There are a number of stands available selling locally handmade art including necklaces, earrings, artwork, clothing items and crafts such as candleholders, plant parts and the rest. If you are looking to get something as a gift for someone which is individual and a one off then this strikes me as a good place to start if it is that you want to break away from the typical Main Street or High Street chain stores.
Timing: there is a lot to be said for getting here earlier in the day. This is mainly because it will be a quieter area allowing you to spend more time at each booth as well as surveying the whole area to see what is available. My recommendation is to come here around 10.30 to 11 in the morning.

Read moreWhat a beautiful building and place to explore, shop and eat. I had heard a lot of things about the Ferry Building and had been wanting to go even before I moved to Northern California. Today I had the opportunity to venture out to the city, to make that visit.
It was a beautiful warm clear summers' afternoon to be in the city, not too windy either. I took BART over and it took about one hour's worth of time and I only had to take one train, whew!
It was my first trip to the city since I had moved to Northern California and I was by myself. I was a little nervous about heading over, but I did it and it was wonderful! The city was buzzing with all kinds of people doing their thing. Honestly, as easy as the Ferry Building is to find, I made sure I knew exactly where I was headed, even if it meant asking where the Ferry Building was all along the path leading to it. Ha, Ha!
I definitely wanted to explore and experience the Ferry Building, but I also had a couple of eateries I wanted to visit. Not too mention I was trying to make it to the Farmers' Market before it closed at 2pm. Distracted by the street vendors selling their wares, I ended up only catching the last 5 minutes of the Farmers' Market. It's okay, I'm sure one of these days I'll return.
Outside the Ferry Building, there was a lot of hustle and bustle going on, it was great, invigorating, alive and fun! I took a few pictures of this grand historical building and entered, and sure enough, there was plenty of life inside the building too. I didn't see a lot of shops that weren't selling food of some kind.
Walking around, perusing made me feel good inside, it felt good to be in the city, in the Ferry Building. I was loving it. I found both places I was looking for and ordered an item from each. Both items were delicious, while a little on the expensive side, they were both worth it. I don't doubt the rent at the Ferry Building is expensive.
I enjoyed the second item I ordered from another eatery, outside. It felt good to just sit outside for awhile and enjoy the weather, the view, the vibe and the atmosphere. It was perfect and I would love to return soon.
The Ferry Building is a must visit for anyone, definitely a foodie haven. There is so much hustle and bustle, life, energy, and action happening, it's hard not to want to visit, especially for the food. The Ferry Building is located at the end of Market Street. It has a great view of the Bay Bridge, along with the...
Read moreThe Ferry Building stands there against the bay like an old warrior. It is a good building. It is strong. In 1898 they built it for four million dollars, which was real money then, and it has lasted. The tourists come and go. The food vendors sell their things. It is all clean and proper now, but it was not always so.
In the seventies they wanted to tear it down. The men in their offices said a freeway would be better. But the people knew better and they fought for it, and the building stayed. That was good. A city needs its old buildings the way a man needs his memories.
Now you can buy oysters there, and cheese, and wine, and bread that is very good. The farmers come with their vegetables. The vegetables are fresh and clean and cost too much, but people buy them because they are good vegetables and it is a fine thing to shop in an old building by the water.
Sometimes the wind comes hard off the bay. It is a real wind that can break glass and make the whole place shiver. The architects knew about wind. They built it right. But sometimes the wind wins and things break. That is the way of things by the sea.
The police walk through now and then. They keep it clean of trouble. There is not much trouble there. People are too busy eating and shopping and taking pictures to make trouble. But at night, when it is quiet, you can feel how it used to be when the ferries were the only way across the bay.
Some men want to change it now. They talk about development and progress and making it new. But you cannot make a thing new without losing what made it good in the first place. The building knows this. It has stood through earthquake and fire and the long years when no one cared about it. It will stand through this too.
It is a true building. It does its work without trying to be more than it is. The clock tower stands straight and tells true time. The arches hold their shape. The marble floors are worn in the right places from all the feet that have passed over them. These are honest things.
In the evening, when the fog comes in and the tourists have gone, you can sit in the ferry building with a glass of wine and some bread and cheese. You can watch the boats on the bay and the lights coming on in the buildings across the water. It is a good place to be. That is all there is to say about it, and...
