Zier Pools — Local services in San Marcos

We had our first meeting with Matt B. and Zier Pools in May of 2023 and just finished our backyard project a couple months ago (March 2024). Matt and his team made the entire process enjoyable (as construction can be) and the outcome more than we envisioned.

We began our backyard transformation journey by meeting with at least three different pool builders and landscape designers. Immediately after meeting with Matt, and seeing his proposed design, we knew that we didn’t need to speak with anyone else. We quickly felt that we could trust Matt and his team. He communicated clearly and often, set expectations, and was accountable for every aspect of the project from start to finish. While it’s obvious he is quite busy, Matt communicates proactively and will always return a missed call.

From the very first meeting, Matt was clear that we were entering a long-term relationship. He stressed that both sides needed to feel comfortable and in sync. He was explicit with what our responsibilities were, what his responsibilities were, but still provided great help with those aspects outside of Zier’s purview (such as HOA approvals). He also gave us great recommendations for third parties needed for side projects (such as landscaping and tree removal services).

Personally, I am someone who is extremely detail oriented, needs to know how every aspect of the project was being done, and is uncomfortable not being in control. Coupled with my work-from-home situation, which allowed me to watch the project unfold every single day, the thought of yielding control over a project this large was anxiety-inducing. However, I quickly became comfortable with Matt’s communication style, transparency, and honesty. He was happy to explain each part of the process to me in incredible detail, answer any questions I had, and he continued to set (and reset, when necessary) expectations throughout the entire project.

Once construction began, we were thrilled to see the level of care everyone paid our new home and backyard project. Each and every crew member was careful, respectful, and very pleasant to interact with when we crossed paths. With any project of this size, there were bound to be unexpected hurdles and challenges. Matt informed us of all of these possibilities in advance, telling us more than once, “I want to avoid the potential for any surprises.” Just another way in which Matt reinforced the trust that we placed in him.

With every decision point, and there are many, Matt provided recommendations, guidance, and cautions while allowing us to make our own decisions and not influencing us in any way. He provided context about what he has seen work well, what doesn’t work so well, and what other customers liked/disliked. He was also direct about the pros and cons of any additions or options that came up as the project evolved, allowing us to make informed decisions. During a process with so many permanent decisions to be made, his guidance was invaluable.

The final product is more than we could have imagined when we started. Matt and team helped us to adjust our initial vision into something even better, and made it a reality. If we could give them 100 stars we would. Going into the pool process can be daunting. Anyone that's embarked on this journey knows the research shows pool companies rarely finish on schedule and on average have a 30% overrun. Zier proved the research wrong!

From the moment we contacted them, it was professionalism at it's finest. The first meeting was at our house with our potential PB, Matt Bagby, who just has a great, laid back personality. Don't get that confused with a lack of knowledge , because he explained the entire process that day in our backyard. He really listened to what we wanted, our concerns and our fear on embarking on such a large project. He was on top of everything from permitting, to ground breaking, and all the way through the build. What I really appreciated was Matt's standard of work. If it didn't meet his level, he would have it redone, period. We spoke to him multiple times per week. In a sense, he became our best friend during the process because we spoke to him way more than any of our friends. He didn't sugar coat anything, either. If there was a problem, he met with us to discuss how they were going to remedy it.

Honestly, the entire Zier team was like family. They''re so nice and their craftsmanship is 110%. Each Zier employee, I felt, was just as excited for us to get this pool as we were, and that's hard to find, especially in such a long, arduous process.

At the end, Zier finished ahead of schedule and on budget. No delays (seriously, not one) and ZERO overruns.
