There is so much I can say about Niko at Bay Area Barber Studio but I think I’ll just tell the story of how he won me over as a client for life. My years long barber relocated to Chicago and I was dreading starting the search for a replacement. I do not have easy hair to work with. It grows thick, curly and wild. It also grows in irregular and opposing directions. As Niko so eloquently put it once, “it looks like two hurricanes colliding.”

I booked an appointment with Niko on a whim after procrastinating and growing a seriously unkempt mess on my head. During my first appointment with him, he spent at least 10 minutes studying my head. Of course he asked me what I wanted done but he put in a concerted effort to understand my difficult locks before even picking up scissors or a clipper. All of that studying paid off because that first haircut was as if I’d been working with him for years. After his genuine hard work and spectacular results, he won my business forever.

Despite the quality of that first cut, he has somehow gotten even better at cutting my hair as time has progressed. I recently got married and had a bit of a timing dilemma when it came to getting my hair cut before hand. I was headed out of town and the only timing that would work was to see Niko a whole 6 days before the event. When I told him the cut would need to last almost a week, Niko took a minute, devised a strategy and dove in. He knew exactly what changes to make in order to time the grow out period to perfection. He thought of small things that I would have never imagined. For instance, he shaved the bottom of my sideburns against the grain with a straight razor to halt the growing for as long as humanly possible. Needless to say, the plan worked and my hair was immaculate for the big day.

In addition to being a true master of his craft, Niko is one of the kindest, most genuine and hospitable people I have ever met. He has transitioned from being my barber to being my friend. His studio is well lit, tastefully appointed and always has something cool on the TV. He’s inherently curious and is a brilliant conversationalist. It’s clear he is very driven to succeed and hone his craft.
