I was really excited to try BFT, but my experience at this location was honestly awful. From the moment I walked in, it was overcrowded with more than 25 people in a small space, three per station, and hardly any room to move.
Before class, I was handed a heart rate monitor. I asked if it was required, since I have a heart condition I use my own medical-grade monitor to track safely. They said it was mandatory, so I put it on. Within minutes of the workout, the strap was painfully tight and cutting into my skin, so I took it off and placed it in my cubby.
Then things got uncomfortable fast. A staff member came up to me mid-workout saying, โI donโt see you on the board.โ I explained the strap issue, but soon after, another woman approached me and told me, โYou either need to wear your heart rate monitor or you need to leave.โ I was shocked that someone would speak to a new member that way. No one had explained the board system to me, and instead of offering help or an alternate size, she made it sound like I was breaking a rule.
I explained the same thing to her that the strap was cutting into my skin and uncomfortable but she said I couldn't stay and workout without the monitor and so I told her I'd put it on at the next break. I then walked over to my cubby and awkwardly pull up my shirt in front of everyone to put it on since there is only 45 secs between stations. She saw me struggling to put it on and then finally asked me if I wanted another size! Woah light bulb! Too late she was wasting my time I said no and walked off.
The rest of the class was chaotic. After getting my strap back on I walk over to the bike. The person before me took extra time and didn't get off until after the 45 second rest break which is after her stations set causing me to lose time on my station since she got off once my time started. I had to then set up the bike height and the foot straps. Keep in mind the stations are only about 2 mins so I'm not starting my station until 1 minute in. So when my time was up I was like maybe I should get my seconds back here. The trainer told me I needed to switch and move stations. But I explained I had lost precious time on my bike. He said it was because the other member was doing a test. lol really! So me a paying customer(about $25 class 11 credits w classpass) loses time so she can take a test? Tests should be after class or a special class time.
I have been to many gyms and group fitness studios, from large ones to boutique spaces, and I have never been treated this rudely. I came to work out, not to be embarrassed or micromanaged over a piece of equipment that should have been optional. In fact the webpage says it is "encouraged" see image below.
BFT might have a good concept, but this studio completely missed the mark on professionalism, accessibility, and basic respect. I will...
