I just completed their beginning yarn class. It was an hour long and I was lucky enough to be the only student. I did buy supplies and chose to make a scarf. The staff was very helpful in providing suggestions on what to purchase, what not to purchase, and various techniques for knitting. They were also both super friendly. The store was pleasant to be in too, lots of options, it was clean and inviting. Even though I don't live nearby, it's likely I will be back. If you're new to knitting, I fully recommend the class. I shown the technique with explanation, then I explained the steps as if I was teaching, and then I practiced the steps. She watched my technique and kindly made suggestions that could help me. She understood that people do tasks in their own way and provided examples and suggestions in ways I might modify my technique either just to start or for how I may do things going forward. She also informed me about other techniques and concepts I might pursue going forward. She taught me how to check my work for mistakes and how to prevent and fix them. She was very encouraging and patient. It was great experience. I look forward to finishing my scarf. As a recent graduate with a masters in education, I can back up with this recommendation, the research that agrees with her abilities include concepts in experiential learning (hands on experience), reciprocal teaching (student explains the concepts), multi-modal (visual and auditory), scaffolding (providing a lot of support initially and slowly providing less as appropriate), growth mindset (practice to improve, allow for mistakes, provide patience and understanding, don't expect to be an expert immediately, keep working at it), and concepts to increase the ability to see the work from an expert point of view which helps in transfer, deeper learning, recall, etc. (through explaining the more principal concepts behind the work- why you're doing what you're doing, different ways to look at it, different techniques, etc). Big kudos,...
Read moreI read several reviews of this store, and was initially wary of going since they had warned that the prices were extortionate and their service was iffy at best. Since I needed help selecting yarn for at least three projects, I decided to go anyways if only to get an idea of what yarn I might want to buy online. However, I was very pleasantly surprised.
The staff was very friendly and willing to help me sort through different yarn weights and colors to best fit my patterns, and they even looked over a current project to give me advice on how best to fix my gauge problem without having to return the problematic yarn I had bought online. There was no pressure to buy only their products, and they answered all my questions without hovering while I browsed.
The only reason I didn't give the quality rating an "excellent" was because the yarn I bought was a few dollars more expensive than some online options, but in several cases I got a better deal than what I could find online. Considering the pleasant experience I had there, I am willing to pay a little more if it means contributing to keeping Yarns Unlimited in business. I highly...
Read moreI visited there for the first time today and will definitely come back again! The store itself is lovely and inviting and there is a nice selection of yarns at various price points. It seems like they put a great deal of time into finding out what yarn lines their customers want and try to have something for everyone. The woman working who I assume was the owner was very friendly and welcoming. Really a great...
