This is a review of lunch service, sitting outside. Inside is cute and cozy, with service being as prompt and friendly as needed, not rushed. It’s interesting… is this place a nice bar that serves food? Or a restaurant that also does drinks? The alcohol list is much more extensive than the menu, but that’s not a bad thing at all.
My removal of one star comes from pretty unassuming things but they are important. Our silverware was dirty and napkins had a few crumbs in them. Not dirty like covered in flies, but with water spots and food particles that survived the wash. More gross than actually harmful. The plates are of good quality ceramic, but the flatware itself is pretty boring cafeteria quality. It has been around the block and back again.
Yes I know Heinz is from Pittsburgh. The problem is that it’s packed full of high fructose corn syrup and industrially farmed. It’s not good for you. Wish they had higher quality healthier options from organic brands for the condiments.
The 4 star rating comes mostly, then, from the food which was quite tasty and came out quickly, and from good service.
Finally, think about avoiding the water. Like almost every place in Pittsburgh, the water isn’t actually good to drink. It has dangerous levels of lead and chromium and tastes strongly of the chlorine derivative used to clean it at the source. Not ideal. But absolutely nothing to do with any individual place I review; so it doesn’t affect the stars.
I also reviewed the fanciest places in town and their tap water is the same.
Anyway, lots of small notes here but Lula actually is worth a visit and has tons more options for dinner than lunch, so it’s a steal of a deal for either option. Lunch is incredibly well...
Read moreJust attempted to eat here 20 minutes ago (we live in Sewickley and have been to almost every restaurant downtown except Lula)
We WILL NOT be going back. We sat at a small table inside and there was a man at the bar, sprawled out with a computer and on his cell phone talking VERY loudly.
To put things in context, I work as a nurse at a local hospital and my long shifts are consumed with constraint noise such as screaming, yelling, and beeping.
Me and my husband merely wanted a somewhat peaceful place to eat, but this mans voice was so loud, and we could hear every word. It was hard to have a conversation much less concentrate on what we wanted to order.
We ended up leaving, and when the man on the phone asked us why we were leaving. I told him he was being loud and suggested an office was a better place for him to have the conversation he was having. He stated ‘ this is my office’ which leads me to believe he is the owner: Stephen
There were only 2 other people in the restaurant, and I can’t help but think that if customers encounter this type of disturbance when they want to enjoy a peaceful meal that this may be why the restaurant was almost empty.
On a positive note the waiter there greeted us in a timely manner, and gave us menus and waters very promptly. I give him 5 stars.
*Stephen’s response to my review speaks for itself. His response is abrasive, inaccurate, and unprofessional. I did not (nor would I) call him names. Not sure how any successful, respectable business owner would think it’s acceptable to use their customer service area (dining room) as their ‘office’ if it includes talking very loudly on...
Read morewe walked into the place and got so many stares and were judged by almost everyone in the place. we are young girls and just wanted a nice meal but we were greeted with stares and rude looks from customers and staff. the portions were a whole other thing. we each paid almost $20 for mac and cheese that was about the size of a microwave kraft bowl. there was hardly any. the bacon chunks in the mac were more like ham. the taste was good but the fact that there was so little made my appetite disappear. it was a waste of calories. i would have preferred mcdonald’s. it would have been more worth the money. one of the girls i was with got plain mac, and was charged for bacon after making it clear she didn’t want any and didn’t get any. the waitress barely paid any attention to us, and the other gave us multiple dirty looks. she claimed the bills didn’t matter, and threw them down at us even though the bills were not the same. there were also people waiting to be seated and she pointed to our table, and told them they could sit there whenever we were very clearly not done. there were also people there before us that would have left before us, had we not been rushed out of the way. the table beside us got their food first, after we ordered first and they had more people than we did. would not recommend unless you’re a rich privileged mom with a lake house. Update: just threw it up in the car. was better...
