Rented our daughter's Oboe for school from Kincaid's for 3 years. It was very convenient, even being a family in Hilliard, for them to deliver to the school. There was once an issue that required a repair and they took care of our needs. Admittedly, 3 years of monthly payments especially for a high-end instrument like an oboe is very expensive, but I'm not sure there are less expensive options out there.
So why the 4 stars instead of 5? Well our daughter decided not to continue with the Oboe and so we were set to return it at the end of the school year. Our billing date was the 27th and they stated their rep would be able to pick it up on the 29th and we'd receive a refund for the last month. Due to school year end madness, we were unable to communicate to get the local rep to pickup the instrument on the 29th, and so our only option was to drive to the shop for drop-off. Being 45 minutes away, it's not a convenient option, but we had some other activities in the area the next weekend and dropped it off June 7. When I was still billed for the full month, I inquired why I could not get a refund. They stated they made a mistake and could only offer a partial refund since it was 10+ days past the billing date.
While I understand the delay between cycles and technically having the instrument for many days beyond final bill, I would expect a little bit of grace and understanding after 3 years of rental payments and knowing when a student decides to no longer pursue an instrument and plans to return it, there is no value to the family to keep it. It's just a matter proximity to their shop that limited our return ability. For a business to be unwilling to go the small step to refund the full payment seems a little uncaring. I think the best thing I can say about Kincaid’s is that they’re an incredibly ethical business. They’re always going to take care of their clients - they’re always going to do the right thing. There have been times where I know they could have made more of a profit off a sale, but they always did the right thing for us. They’re always honest and straightforward, and that’s really refreshing in the current climate that we have.
The other thing that I’ve always been impressed with as a band director – and I would highly recommend them to any other band director – is whether or not you’re their biggest or smallest client, whether you do tens of thousands of dollars of business with them or you do something on a much smaller scale, they will treat you like you are a very valuable customer. That is definitely not an experience we’ve had with every music store we have done business with.
