Indeed this place has experienced a mass Renaissance. For decades it was abandoned and had suffered Mass deterioration. Thankfully it didn't have a meeting with a wrecking ball.
Thankfully, the teamwork of the city, the state and the federal government were able to miraculously resurrect this iconic landmark and did a phenomenal job in terms of restoration as well as preserving many of the remaining inventory of historical artifacts of the original railroads and of the former Charles Hotel from a bygone era. The consolidation of local bus service PVTA, Intercity service of Greyhound and Peter Pan buses, rail service of commuter rail and Amtrak offer great convenience to travel to a multitude of destinations. They could probably add an overhead shelter at the Intercity bus depot areas similar to what was at the prior Peter Pan Station and they need to raise all the platforms for all of the trains at all the tracks. Moreover they should consider opening the upper-level part of Amtrak for people to wait for the trains up on that level to see their trains coming or going as well as offering additional restrooms for Amtrak passengers without them having to climb up and down stairs or go on...
Read moreThis is one of the nicer stations along the Hartford line route. Much nicer than Hartford CT station. Easy access to trains and buses to go throughout Massachusetts and back to Connecticut with the Hartford line.
I will say that the signage for the additional, not so used tracks, is abysmal and or non existent. I've had to show a few people how to get to those additional tracks while waiting downstairs for my own train.
It is nice they've added benches to the upstairs track waiting area and that they do have two fast food eating areas.
However, this place looks like it's falling apart slowly. While they have added renovations to some areas in the downstairs part of the station, areas like the upstairs waiting area for the trains, the televisions showing the schedule upstairs hardly ever work. And don't even get me started with the bathrooms, these bathrooms are absolutely disgusting and although maintenance constantly cleans them, people are slobs and in the mail bathroom they pee all over the floor.
Would love to see more renovations to the upstairs train waiting area as well as the bathrooms. Even if that means hiring people to teach men how to properly use a urinal and not pee...
Read moreMy first time ever in Massachusetts and Springfield.the spirit of the city alone is just a different vibe from Newark New Jersey and all of New Jersey.what really makes me want to return to the city and most especially to this train station is the security guards who actually helped me to pay for my bus ticket once they heard of my situation I will return to Springfield and I may even move to Northampton. I heard some complaints about the tax bracket there, but the beauty of Springfield and the train station and the cleanliness of the city overall, is a guarantee that I will return to Springfield and I will find those security officers and buy them dinner and pay them back..big up big time Springfield Massachusetts and Union station security guards. Compared to my state and my city mainly of Newark, well Newark Penn station has Scott Union station beat architectural e but the overall love and feel and the architecture of Springfield hands-down I'd rather live in Springfield. I had a lovely experience in your city. Jamie Q{Boris} Chambers jc6233076@gmail.com...
