Please don't support this business. We booked this tour based on the largely good reviews of it. We had family visiting from out of town and thought this would be a nice local activity to do with them. And if we liked it, we planned to take other friends and family on the tour in the future.
The tour was scheduled from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. En route there, at 9:37 a.m. the owner had his employee call us to ask where we were. We were puzzled and said, "Doesn't it start at 10:00 a.m.? We are running 4-5 minutes behind the 10 a.m. start time." It turned out that guests were supposed to arrive at 9:15 - 45 minutes before the tour was scheduled to begin. We admittedly unfortunately missed that requirement in the communications. We acknowledged that to the employee and asked if they could accommodate us at a later time instead. She said that the owner would not do so without making us pay the entire fee ($544.31) again! We asked why he needed to keep the entire fee (instead of a partial fee) when there was no wear and tear / use of their scooters or labor to "train" us or to give us a tour. She said the owner refused, because we had reserved inventory they could have sold to someone else. We had even paid for a fuel surcharge and a loss damage waiver (essentially insurance on any damage to the scooters) too on all 4 scooters we rented. They couldn't even have the courtesy to reimburse those, which have nothing to do with "reserved inventory."
We then returned home and discovered the company's other poor reviews revealed that the company has had this situation before, and evidently has not done enough to prevent this from occurring.
Yep, we missed it in their communications, but clearly we aren't the only ones to have had this problem. Obviously, the company's manner of disclosing this 45 minute early arrival requirement is not effective enough if it is still happening to folks. Why not do something logical like say the event starts at 9:15 a.m. instead of saying a 10:00 a.m. start time? Instead, they send a reminder email where the subject line actually says 10:00 a.m. when the body of the email says 9:15. Even better would be to make sure that an employee connects with each customer by phone before the tour to verbally confirm that the customer is aware of the 45 minute early arrival requirement and that the business will refuse to accommodate late arrivals or refund any portion of the charges.
And why not permit customers in this situation to attend a future tour that was not fully booked in order to provide good customer service and build/maintain goodwill and referrals and repeat business? If not fully booked, it would have been cost-neutral to the business and have preserved its goodwill with us. Finally, why not refund at least the $56.00 that accounted for fuel surcharges and and loss damage waivers?
I run a services business myself. And if I ran my business like this, with no give and take with customers or flexibility with my business practices or procedures to address customer issues, I would not have much of a business.
I am a firm believer in what goes around, comes around. So while business for Strasburg Scooters may be good enough now for the owner to not have to worry about customer service, referrals and repeat business, it may not always be the case.
So, I would encourage you to consider supporting other scooter tour businesses in the region who may provide better customer service. Here are a few that we found:
Bird-in-Hand Scooter Tours, Retrotours and GettyPeds
I plan to submit a complaint to the Better Business Bureau and one to the Pennsylvania State Attorney...
Read moreI'm gonna give it honest review about this place. For starters I want to state I have never rode moped, motorcycle, or any motorized bicycles in my life. This was my very first time. My tour guide was Brian he was awesome guide really helped me out and made me have more confidence in myself as we were Riding like I said this was my first time on anything. We tooked the covered bridge tour and he told us that was about good 30 miles ride. So we got there they fitted us with helmet and showed us what to do and had drive around in circles til he felt comfortable with us. Once we got road it was fun dude I zooming down road making these turns I was doing great for my first time. But then he took us these giant hill like I could see the top of silos, three-story house. I wasn't aspecting these big hills with gnarly curves in them. The worst ones were the steep ones with a stop sign the bottom of it. Again it's my first time riding in my entire life but I listen to his advice "have faith in your bike." I didn't fall once and make back trusting him. I wish I knew ahead of time of these giant hills and steep roads. But beside that it was really fun and I had great time. Not gonna lie to you I'll probably be back again. It was really fun. I learned a lot and would recommend this riders with no experience and want to get it. Go on this you'll be shown how take curves, stop, take on big hills, deal actually traffic and traffic lights. If your experience rider I highly highly recommend it. You'll see some amazing views and really have a blast. I loved I think I'm going to get into riding thanks to these awesome people. I wanted to note tho you are on actually roads with Amish people. It so neat interacting with them. Something you'll never get from sitting in car. I remember the one house we passed an little Amish girl screamed "their here." And all these little Amish kids came running to wave at us with big smiles as we passed by. I'll never forget that. Thanks guys for awesome time I leaned alot and I'll be back soon enough haha maybe for some ice cream on that...
Read moreScooter coupe cars had loud engines and issues with throttle not staying steady, either ran too high or too low. First appearance they look fine, until you run it. I have a motorcycle license so I know what normal is. The instructor guide wanted us to follow extremely close to each other, only one scooter coupe car length between us and file in a line. I feel this is too much of a liability, especially since our coupe stalled 4 times, three in parking lot before we left and once on the street. Some of the roads we were having to cross over were dangerous blind bends. The country side was beautiful but the loud engines interfered with that serene beauty. Guide was informative but was not happy when anyone didn't get close enough in line. The tour consisted of a small garage type barn with about 5 horses you could pet while in their stalls. They had a garage with about 6 Amish buggies but an aggressive dog was in that garage we were told to go into. A growling dog who was guarding his food about 7 feet from us and not tethered. We knew not to go close to the corgi who stared us down while growling. The guide gave us a good history on Amish living. We stopped by an Amish school house, for a little history lesson which was good. We saw two covered bridges and stopped for pictures. They weren't as beautiful as those in chester county but hey, we saw them. I think they need quite coupes and we had hoped we would stop at a nice large Amish farm that possibly sold their delicious goods. We had a good time but we wouldn't do it again. We rented 2 coupe cars and it was the 4 of us adults. The price really didn't showcase the adventure like we thought it should have. The online paper process was terrible and mandatory đ«. Love the whole concept but needs...
