The staff is nice and the place looks nice, but the food was subpar.
I had the sausage, eggs, and cheddar cheese on a croissant breakfast sandwich. The eggs were flavorless and had a very poor texture. They cooked the eggs in a flavor-neutral oil/fat that gave the eggs no flavor. To add insult to injury the eggs were not whipped before cooking which meant there was no air in the eggs to give them any fluffy texture.
The sandwich might have been saved by the rest of the ingredients except that the croissant was also garbage. One expects croissants to be buttery and flaky, but not so at the Speckled Hen. When the food was brought out, the croissant looked almost soggy like it had been sitting in a fridge for too long and the kitchen hadn't even bothered to toast it which might have helped redeem it somewhat. When biting into the croissant, it was also devoid of any flavor. Either the kitchen is using poor-quality croissants or they just keep them out too long and then reuse which kills the flavor.
The only things that had flavor were the cheddar cheese and the sausage. However, there was hardly any cheddar, which left really the sausage to save the whole sandwich. But with a flavorless base (the eggs) a flavorless bread (the croissant), and a tiny amount of cheese, the sausage couldn't possibly save...
Read moreSurprised that this place is rated as high as it is. Very disappointed with the menu items we ordered: egg and cheese croissant, breakfast burrito, southwest bowl, house granola. Aside from the granola, everything tasted very bland or was a strange combination (southwest bowl). If you decide to sit inside, I would avoid the left side of the building from where you first enter (employees entering and leaving back of house, plate scraping and people clearing their tables, unattended children in the kids corner, people entering and leaving through an egress door instead of the main entrance, low ceilings which amplifies any noise and talking). Not a very pleasant experience if you are looking for something relaxed on a Sunday.
The way this cafe runs is similar to a Panera Bread. One might not realize this when they first enter the cafe, but you are supposed to seat yourself. You take a menu with you and place your order at the front counter. They give you a tracker to place at your table (which didn’t seem to work by the way) so they can deliver your food. When you are done, you clear your table before you leave.
I don’t feel like this cafe meets the standard set by a cafe in a...
