Pros: -best routesetting and variability in the terrain. One of the best for new climbers. -laid back environment, very very friendly community. The staff are amazing -can bring dogs, only if they're well behaved. They even have a little water bowl for them :) -seriously, again, the community will go out of their way to help you with anything that you might be stuck on. Everyone is so helpful and informative. Best vibes -Very affordable, and doesn't have a predatory / convoluted membership system like Edgeworks does. -pads are really good, falling is a non issue
Cons: -parking isn't great. There's usually always room to park for free, but it's a pretty weird terrain. -area of Tacoma unfortunately has a lot of homeless, so don't leave valuables in your car. -cannot buy shoes here. Location isn't big enough to stock them. -bouldering only, no extended climbing, like lead or top rope.
At the end of the day, the cons aren't enough for me to downgrade to a 4 star. Also, I can't stress enough how good the routes are! As a beginner, you may not realize how good the routes are, but trust me-- you can go from a pure beginner and train up through the grades with plenty of variety. They change one wall, once a week, so you'll have 6 weeks to work on something before they change it. It's a perfect amount of time.
I had trouble with Edgeworks-- the terrain didn't feel as varied to me, the cost was higher, and the routes weren't as compelling. Climbing gyms should mainly be about the climbing, and Climb Tacoma definitely...
Read moreThis is a terrible gym. Monthly membership is as expensive as Seattle bouldering project and Seattle bouldering project is AT LEAST 10x bigger. The routes are unenjoyable and not fun. The location is in the hood, and my back pack was stolen in a cubby that is right by the main desk! I used a guest pass on my brother in the beginning of December and went back at the end on January and since he had already been they made him pay $20...making guest passes pretty much pointless. 75% of the gym was close due to setting and they didn't tell him until after he paid and didn't allow a refund. Also, You have to cancel your membership 30 days in advance so I was forced to pay another $60 to a place I didn't want to go to anymore. I highly...
Read moreTo simply put it, Climb Tacoma is a BIG little gym. It's variability is good enough to suit anyone from the beginners to some of the more elite boulder savy people. They do the best that they can in creating new routes on a consistent basis (I believe it's almost a new wall every week). They might have a small staff at the moment, but they're out putting phenomenal work. If you spend enough time here, it's easy to get welcomed into their little community. They also have a little decent gym and a phenomenal area for kids to learn. If you decide to climb here, make sure you remove all of the valuables from your vehicle due to the occasional uncouth...
