When we were deciding where to spend an academic sabbatical year in 2002, my wife and I had the opportunity to be in Tempe. A couple from City of the Lord approached us and said: “The two of you look tired, burnt out. Why don’t you spend your sabbatical year with us [City of the Lord]? We will love you back to life!” You don’t get many invitations like this in life, so we took them up on it. The fact is, they kept their promise. The couple in question doesn’t remember saying this. But we, on the other hand, will never forget. City of the Lord is a Catholic Charismatic Covenant Community. It is an association of laypeople that has official status in the Diocese of Phoenix and in its California locations. I have never met a group of several hundred people who love God and each other, and everyone, for that matter, the way these people do. This location is the community’s center, with a large hall, a smaller one, a chapel, and a number of offices. The building is accessible and it has a children’s play area. But this is not a parish. All members belong to Catholic parishes (mostly Roman rite, but their are also Eastern Catholic members). To become a member requires a period of serious formation and mutual discernment, after which one makes a public covenant commitment ( almost as serious as getting married). If you long for a community of Catholics who are very intentional about the way they lead their lives, City of the Lord just might be what you are looking for. But nothing is automatic. It’s about relationship. In the end it’s about Love, as St Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 13. If you have read this far, perhaps you should look into this life. Read moreThis group of people really seem to live what they believe of generosity, mercy, and love. They have a wonderful facility which they use for events, parties, prayer functions, meals, and more. The grounds are beautiful and kept very clean, and the kitchen and dining room are amazing.
This place could be used for so many things, from seminars and lectures in the main hall, to wedding receptions, dances, prayer meetings, neighborhood forums, community initiatives, ...
