Here are the positive and negative aspects of my experience with Calhoun's Jewelers. As a reference, I'm getting married this year, and my fiance purchased my engagement ring and wedding band from Eden Garden Jewelry, where we had an exceptional experience. He had even paid extra to have an engraving on the inside of the engagement ring, which read "Forever yours." My fiance and I visited Calhoun's Jewelers to purchase his wedding ring and to have my ring set resized and soldered together. We were assisted by Deb, who was wonderful throughout the process. My fiance ordered a tungsten ring, which arrived promptly and was perfectly sized to fit his finger. I needed my rings resized down by half a size and soldered together. Deb made several comments about the engraving and noted it down on the order form for them to be mindful of it. The original engraving was clear and easily readable due to the font size. When I went to pick up my rings for the first time, they were beautifully soldered together. However, the engraving was missing entirely. A different staff member assisted me during the visit and seemed skeptical when I asked about it until I showed her a picture of the original engraving. She consulted with the jeweler, who informed me it would take another week to rectify the issue, as they needed to take the rings apart, engrave them, and then solder them back together. The rings were ready the next day, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the engraving was crooked, misplaced, and too small to read without a magnifying glass. While I expected some wear on the engraving due to the soldering process, I anticipated that the engraving would be restored to its original state. Instead, there was a lack of communication, and the engraving was not redone as expected. The final result left me disappointed and saddened, especially when I look at the ring now.
In summary, I would strongly advise against bringing an engraved ring to Calhoun's Jewelers or requesting any meaningful engraving on your jewelry. While the men's rings are satisfactory (hence the 2 stars) and the staff is generally helpful, the engraving service was extremely poor.

Read moreI came to this shop this summer when I was visiting family in Topeka. First, I waited forever to be helped at this shop. At first I thought all of the other salespeople were busy, but when some of them became free, I was largely ignored. I came to sell some of my old stones and scrap gold that I no longer needed and shop for peridot rings. However, the man appraising my pieces acted very suspicious of me, like he thought I was selling scrap gold for drugs or something. The way I was treated was honestly offensive, and I cannot figure out why I was treated with such hostility. I am a young, single woman with an extensive gold and semi-precious collection, but I think the staff did not believe that I belonged in a jewelry store. I was dressed casually, but not poorly. I was also sick and wearing a mask at the time, which could be part of the reason staff gave me the cold shoulder. After offering me a small amount for my scrap collection (totally fine, one piece was only 9k gold), I told them to simply keep the gold and stones--without paying me--and recycle them. I wasn't very concerned with being paid for the materials unless they had been worth significant amounts, and just did not want to see the gold sit around in my home. The man seem surprised when I declined payment, which confirmed my suspicions that staff had likely treated me coldly because they thought I was a young woman who was desperate to sell some gold for money. Obviously, I decided to shop for peridot rings elsewhere. I was so excited to be back in my home state and experience some genuine midwestern hospitality. Truly...
