I was uninstalling and reinstalling a nvidia driver when my laptop decided to black screen and not be able to boot up login or to safe mode. I decided to bring it in to Geeksquad that evening to see if they could offer any advice.
The gentleman that helped me that evening was very genuine and performed a basic hard drive test from a flash drive in front of me, and it passed. He decided that it was not a hard drive error and tried to look up the problem online, and could not find any results. He then ran another test from the flash drive and saw that I had a registry/driver error, and ran the program to fix it but it could not solve my booting issue.
By now I decided that I was fine with a factory reset and he told me to download from Microsoft's website the recovery media onto a flash drive and reinstall from there. He offered to take in the laptop and have the morning staff take one last look, and I agreed.
The next afternoon I received a call from Geeksquad stating that my laptop passed their Bios test, but they found that the hard drive was dead. I came in after work and a different woman told me that my laptop could not run with the hard drive and gave me details on pricing. I asked about the test that the gentleman the evening before performed, and she told me that test was not accurate and their extensive, more accurate test revealed that my hard drive was dead.
I was close to believing her, and almost spent the $40 hard drive installation fee, the $100 OS installation fee, as well as the $ for a new hard drive. I decided to take the laptop back and try to reinstall Windows from a flash drive.
And it worked. My laptop was able to reinstall Windows and it even saved my old files into a huge folder called Windows.old . I still cannot believe how adamant Geeksquad was about my laptop not being able to work if I did not pay for a new hard drive. Take their advice with a grain of salt if they start...
Read moreThese electronic devices are constructed by the manufacturer as inexpensively as possible, and so they break and malfunction. The geek squad warranty will fix any problem, no matter how it happened (except intentional damage--you'd have to be heading to the asylum). They are pleasant to deal with, get the job done in reasonable time, and even have progress updates for you during the process. They do everything by appointment so that they can devote their entire attention to the one customer before them. And you can usually get an appointment the same day. Another big benefit is that you don't have to deal with the manufacturer. In my experience, that can be daunting. Best Buy wants to make you happy because they need return customers. The warranty on my $1400 laptop cost me $300 for 3 years. But the item was marked down $300 at Christmas so I felt that I got a deal on the laptop and I put the money towards my peace of mind. For 3 years I don't have worry about a thing. And I don't have to be in any phone queues to deal with manufactures or have any arguments about repairs. If you are not on a tight budget, get the geek squad warranty. You'll be...
