I went to the Home depot store over on bridge street this morning to buy a few pieces of lumber for my deck. This experience was even worse than my experience two weeks ago, so I thought to write this review hoping that someone in the home depot management sees this and fires the store manager just to let the store employee know that their job is customer service.
Looking for some help in the lumber department, I finally found someone, after about 5 minutes. I asked for help and explained my need. The young fellow just rolled his eyes, and ignored me. He proceeded to go back and forth in the isle acting like he was doing something, but nothing. He was just wasting time so I go away. I gave up and went looking myself, found the stuff, loaded the lumber on the cart (no help from a number of the store employees who passed by).
Anyway, I went over to the cashier to pay and leave. In front of me is an older fellow (about 75) and a lady about 50. Both appeared winded from the heavy lifting of the hardware in their cart. Looked like we had similar experiences. The cashier called for someone to come and help these folks in the parking lot. So, the gentleman and the lady left the store. I paid for my stuff and on my way to my car and see the old man and the lady struggling loading the material while a couple of the store employees were passing by. I noticed that they asked the employees for help, and they were ignored. I went over and helped them load their stuff in their car, and told them that it has also happened to me before. I asked them to write a review and write a letter to the store manager. Not sure if they will.
Do I expect too much from the store employees to help their customers (especially seniors) load the heavy stuff in their car? Or is this a sign of an incompetent store manager whose employees are not incentivized to help customers and prefer wondering aimlessly around the...
Read moreLarge box home improvement centers have seem to become the go-to place where all your building supply needs could be picked by a DIY person. But, I really don't enjoy going to them. Their large size makes it a very time consuming event even to get a few things. Also, they seem to have a lot but they don't have a lot of everything like a traditional hardware store would have. They are also more expensive on most of their lumber and wood products then traditional lumber yards. There is also less of a selection of lumber and trim pieces on hand.
There is the advantage of the online connection which if you order online, they are more likely to have more of what you want; plus, they'll have it ready for you when you go there to pick it up and in many cases you can have it delivered to your home so you don't have to go to the store at all. Home Depot also is very generous with credit and often offers interest-free promotionals which does encourage me to go there and buy for big projects.
What perhaps keeps me coming back to this Home Depot in DeWitt, New York is the staff. For the most part they are always friendly and more than willing to help me with my many complex questions and special requests. They never seem bothered by my something endless personal requests. They also seem to remember me every time I go in, which is surprising considering the thousands of customers that must pass through there in a day. Since Home Depot allows you to take your dog into the store, I used to take my dog. The staff is very welcoming to pets. And though my animal has passed away over a year ago, the staff still comments how much they enjoyed my dog coming to the store. I find this amazing that they would remember me as a dog owner considering there are number of people that come to the store with dogs. So yes, it is less painful for me to go to this big box home improvement center because of the staff...
Read moreAnd we spent $80+ thousand for for home improvements there last year AND this year alone. Including a new washer, dryer and fridge!
Great for contractors. Only so, so for customers. I had to cut my own wood and find my own electrical replacement outlets. No employee there would help. Not enough employees at this store. Contractors are paid a lot more attention to. Customers that are DYers suffer. Tool selection is great. Unfortunately, Lowes in Cicero was much more customer oriented, so my wife goes there now. I used to go to Home Depot because they have a lot of what I need. And if you want to renovate your home with a new kitchen, THEN this Home Depot is VERY user friendly. I spent over 25 grand for our inside home upgrades and the contractor was very professional, but spoke little English. He tried to restrict where I could walk in my own house with a see through tarp. But I took it down and he didn't say anything. But I said that I WILL check on his work whenever I pleased. He said nothing and went back to work. That he spoke very little English helped him and his comrades. Price was very reasonable. I have had to repair the hinges on the cheaply built cabinets, though. Darned Chinese very poor quality. Still worth the 20+ grand because the flooring and free extras are excellent at first. . I still like American made products. Curse Richard Nixon for opening the door to China and for taking us off of the Gold standard for our money. I'll just shop at...
