Cannot recommend Sundown more highly enough! First and foremost, they’re a family business and that comes through with the friendly and attentive service no matter what you’re shopping for.
Our most recent visit was for a new set of skis, boots, and poles for my wife. Admittedly we were lured in by the Black Friday deals, and despite the store being a little bit crowded, Jonathan was extremely patient and helpful throughout the entire experience.
We were on the fence between seasonal rentals, rent to own, or just outright purchasing, and Jonathan explain the math and available equipment for all the scenarios. We started off with an advanced boot fitting, complete with a 3-D foot scan, and then Jonathan whisked out a few different boot options (one for each foot) asking my wife to walk around in them for 5-10 mins each. After going through the exercise a few times, she zeroed in on a nice pair of Nordicas. From there, we went to the skis, and they were running a great deal on brand new equipment from last season, so we bagged 40% off for Blizzard skis and Marker bindings, then grabbed a set of Leki poles to complete the set. Their prices are competitive to begin with, but they do price match in the off chance you find something cheaper that’s in stock (same size, year, etc) elsewhere.
From start to finish, it was a great experience, and we both learned a lot through all of it…Even got some great tips for layering so don’t be surprised if we’re back in a week or two for some new base layers!
PS, and just as a heads up, they charge you a $50 fee for the advanced boot fitting they do (3D foot scans, etc) but that is applied towards any boot purchase, or if you decide not to get boots, you can still walk away with a $50 gift card to the store, so there’s no loss. I presume they do that so people don’t come in, spend a couple hours of an associate’s time, and then not purchase anything, and it makes...
Read morePassed this place many times on my ride to school and finally stopped in before a trip to Vermont earlier this year. Upon entering there were no employees visible in the store so I did a soft lap to get a feel for the place - It's fairly nice. On my way back to the front there was a blonde haired employee standing at the cash register. We exchanged hellos. We would soon become oddly acquainted. Eventually I found my way over to the men's section on the right side of the store. I only needed a few small things, but looked through a wide range of pants and jackets. My old stuff didn't really fit me anymore and I could have easily been talked to into all-new gear. As I walked around a bit more I noticed the blonde lady had left the register and now was standing in the corner keeping an eye on me. I was the only person in the retail section of the store. I turned around a few times and we made awkward eye contact each time. She never asked if I needed help with a size, or if I was looking for anything specific. I thought this might have been a coincidence so I made my way over to the center of the store where the hats and gloves are located. My blonde shadow was not far behind. After another minute or two of looking around I left the store. It was clear she was suspicious of me potentially shop lifting. These are real silly-goose antics for a shop located so close to several college campus'. If I return, I'll be the guy walking around in only boxer-briefs so you folks can be sure I'm not committing theft. My purchase that day would not have exceeded $50. However, I left, went to school, went on Amazon, and ordered...
Read moreThis shop is absolutely not to be trusted. I gave this shop many chances since they are in my neighborhood, but they are totally inept. They literally have no idea about ski equipment. Their employees lack knowledge to a degree that it’s dangerous. Two recent incidents bring me to this conclusion. 1) they specified and sold me the wrong ski boot for my son. I realized this myself after I got home and read the owners manual for the boots. The boots max weight is set at 99 pounds and my son is 113 pounds. They even weighed him but proceeded to sell me incorrect ski boots. This could have been potentially dangerous. I had to return them. 2) I took my skis to be tuned up and on the fist day skiing on them realized I’m having trouble turning the skis and kept catching edges and almost fell several times. I took them to the local mountain shop at ski resort and they advised me that the angle at which the edges were sharpened were totally incorrect and dangerous too. I paid to have them redone and it was like I was on a new pair of skis. The shop is absolutely not to be trusted. Will never go...
