I have been a member for about 5(1/2) years. As of the new year 2025 they recently raised my membership pricing from $30-35 and justified it with building a new sauna at the Troy location. Normally I wouldnāt care about this price change, however there is a lack of transparency and when I confronted them and asked politely about the price change they said in our contract āweāre not obligated to let you know about price changes.ā I laughed and said thatās ridiculous and asked if my membership price could be reverted back to $30. He said no, and I said ok I want to cancel my membership. The unprofessionalism and scams they run as business owners are criminal and disrespectful. With all due respect if you have any dignity or logical thinking you would not give either of these owners another pennyā¦
As far as equipment goes the plates are a nice metal and machines are decent at best. Free weights and squat racks/benches are solid. The 24/7 aspect is nice but now you can pay a fraction of the price at a cheaper gym with way better machines and mediocre free weight/rubber plate section. As far as the actual gym venue goes, the place is crammed and tiny and the layout/functionality leaves little/no room for functional training. The Madison heights location is a little bigger and offers a bit more, but for not being able to use the training/boxing room at the Troy location itās a complete and utter let down where they have trainers perform mediocre workouts with mediocre results. Smoothies are overpriced and so are their generic and overpriced supplement section⦠like they slightly market these supplements above market retail to make a quick buck LOL. Anyone with a simple google search could discover this for themselves! Now concluding the fact that I have the VIP membership, every time I brought guests I was looked down upon and they held some sort of resentment towards me and my guests. Frank would always hound down me and my guest before closing time and would constantly interrupt our workouts and rush us out as we were just about to leave. Itās rude and disrespectful and even left a bad taste in every guests mouth. They all said āwhats his problemā or āis he always like that?ā Another instance that portrays their morals and lack of respect is an instance where I came to get a workout in with my buddy who is a member as well. I ended up forgetting my keys at home with my membership card on it and since it was past hours I couldnāt get in. So instead of driving all the way back my friend and I both thought it would be ok if he swiped his and we both went in because we were both members and Frank knew both of us. Sadly that wasnāt the case Frank shut down my friends membership and charged him $50. Then when you ask for a refund or try to reason he tells you āsorry the security company took the money I canāt do anything about that.ā I paid my friend the $50 and we both felt let down for such a minor misunderstanding. Even if you argue with them they will say āitās all in the contractā and āwe donāt want to be held liable for any injuries.ā Like bro we signed a contract we couldnāt sue you if even if I wanted toā¦?
Summarizing my experience of PowerHouse Troy & Madison Heights I would argue that the facilities are very tiny and offer very little to no functionality/proficient training. The equipment is very outdated and limited in their selections. Free weight section is amazing and love the sleek metal plates! Mirrors and lighting within the gym is very good however posing mirrors in the bathrooms/mens locker room is underwhelming and not enough mirrors. Saunas in both locations are decent sizes, and very good hot temperatures. Ownership- no transparency or accountability will take advantage of every gym goer they get their hands on! Staff- pretty friendly and do a great job of organizing equipment. Not coming back, but hope they invest in better equipment, expand the gym, prioritize respect and decency with their clients, and stop scamming customers with their supplement section and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIn the fall of 1993, I joined Powerhouse Madison Heights. Since that time, iāve enjoyed a VIP membership at both there in the Troy location. For the past 10 I have Been primarily at the Livernois- Troy location and I have been privileged to be part of their establishment that continues to change an upgrade itās facility, supplements to keep up with the latest trends of health and fitness. It is in no short fall, that its owner, George Shaoni, along with his brother Frank, his son Jr, his manager Rocky and his staff, have tirelessly maintained to keep it one of the most elite training centers anywhere. I have known many of its members some for over 20 years now and have come from all walks of life. I canāt imagine not going there on a regular basis. Iāve been a martial artist for over 30 years. I trained with every type of athlete and even solidiers and I am a retired firefighter four times decorated including life-saving. I couldāve Never accomplished that without the help of George, who has many times taking a personal interest in my life along with many others, many times. Heās our brother, our coach and our friend. When I first met him he would be critical of some of my routines even though I had been trained by highly qualified instructors, and Iāve taken his advice for diet, and even changing up my routines here and there, which to this day been a blessing. Very few other gyms have the same equipment or technology, and he finds a way to continuously improve at all costs. The state of the art training room that he added a few years ago is second to none. He And his crew not only greet you with a smile each and every time like clockwork, but sets you in motion. Iāve known many people as long as 20 years or more in that place and continue to meet new people all the time, young and old, all sizes and shapes, with their own stories and itās just such a motivating yet warm and inviting place to work out and accomplish your physical needs. Yes, it doesnāt have a pool or a hair salon lol, but from the moment you get out of your car within seconds you can be on any piece of equipment and ready to go. And you are never left to your own devices ever. They will gladly assist you in anyway possible. Itās laughable that someone could possibly make a comment saying itās a so called a āScamā. Far too many people would have to disagree with you, myself included. Many people have achieved great results and improved every form of their life by just being there. Some have had personal and even physical setbacks, myself included, and George has always reached out and instantly went out of his way to help those in need and made sure that we didnāt skip a beat. And that was at no charge. When you commit to a membership and or a program, you should just stick with it and have them put you through the pace that you can handle until you achieve positive results. You would not regret it. They wouldāve have gone above and beyond, and I for one could not imagine not having powerhouse gym as a second home to go to. Living and being the best you can be, especially with improved Health is a gift. That place is how you get it. Iām sorry you couldnāt handle the heat of the kitchen as they say, but you missed a Great meal. Itās not an ordinary place and I gladly defend my good friend and life coach George, because heās what makes that place great and one of the hardest working people I know, working virtually everyday all day long, keep that place in perfect running order top to bottom. Inviting and not intimidating. From the very beginner to a seasoned pro athlete it has it all and more. Thank you George Shaouni for making life better and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAs a member for years, I can arguably and proudly say that Powerhouse Troy, and its sister location- Madison Heights, are both incredible in their own unique fashions. You find community and culture, a clean and well taken care of gym with excellent equipment, and great ownership/staff.
Recently, Troy went under renovation. They now have a steaming sauna that all the members were excited to finally have at this location. With joy, the members have raved about how hot and nice this sauna is. I can attest to this. The sauna is great!
Proper sauna etiquette means that you respect the rules and guidelines set forth by the gym, such as but not limited to: no nudity, keeping the door closed, and leaving the time and temperature set at its standard.
I mention this, because it is quite unfair for some members to not follow the guidelines and complain to the staff, and leave rude reviews of Powerhouse being āunaccommodating,ā because someone wants to sit in a sauna with the door open or lower the temperature. How does that make sense? A sauna is meant to be HOT.
By definition, a sauna is, āa small room used as a hot-air or steam bath for cleaning and refreshing the body.ā And the sole purpose of this HOT room, āis to relax, sweat, and experience a range of health benefits.ā
So, to the people who think it is āunfairā that staff did not lower the temperature or allow you to sit with the door open- letting cool air in which defeats the purpose of the room, It is actually unfair for you to ruin someone elseās time in the sauna. If itās ātoo hot,ā perhaps your body is unable to handle a sauna and you should speak with your doctor...
