I've dined at their location in Atlanta numerous times, and this location lived up to my expectations. I ate here once when I first got into town for an event on Tuesday, in the late afternoon before dinner rush. Our waitress (Maxine Michelle) was friendly, energetic, knew the menu, and impeccable with the decorum you would expect in a place like this (which is tough to do without coming across stuffy or stiff).
We had the deviled eggs and steak rolls to start. The deviled eggs were excellent. The steak rolls are very good, and would order them again if someone was interested in trying them.
For entrees I had the ribeye, medium rare, Pittsburgh style (I didn't use that term, and to the staff's credit, the manager - I believe it was Jessica - stopped by the table to confirm what I asked for, which was very thoughtful and thorough). The steak came out perfect, and I only had one little bit of gristle. Not enough to detract from my opinion, I understand 'flawless cuts of steak everytime' isn't really realistic, you're bound to hit a bit of it now and then.
My friend ordered their catch of the day, I want to say it was Halibut? He said it was very good, just strugged with some of the small bones that were at one end of the fish (which, let's be fair, nothing can be done to remove every bone in every cut of fish).
One of our sides was the whipped garlic potatoes. THESE ARE SO GOOD! Seriously. Unless you can't eat potatoes, get these.
The crab cake was good, it had a very high crab meat ratio, though it's the one thing I'd be iffy on next time. I can't put my finger on it, the word dry comes to mind, but that isn't quite right. This was the only item on the menu that I felt (in this instance) wasn't a good value.
For dessert we had creme brulee, which was fantastic.
Fast forward to Saturday, my sister and her kids joined me there for dinner. We had Maxine Michelle wait on us again (she goes by Michelle, btw. But one manager calls her Maxine because that's how she is in the system).
This time it was calamari and the deviled eggs as starters. Again both were excellent. I'm more of a 'just lemon' guy on my calamari, though the marina sauce they brought was very good.
I ordered the ribeye again, this time blue cheese encrusted along with their bacon blue cheese butter on the side. Let's face it, if I'm worried about my cholesterol, I probably shouldn't be eating out at all. :)
My sister had the same steak, minus the butter. We both enjoyed the steaks thoroughly. The kids enjoyed their food (clean plate club), but it was harder to get anything more than that from them.
For dessert the kids split a carrot cake and my sister and I split their chocolate layer cake. Both are easily large enough to share between two people. Maybe three. Again, fantastic.
Also, if you are into gastronomy / food interactions, we had a bottle of Belle Glos Balade (2021). Taking a sip of wine before a bite of the chocolate cake brought a huge intensity to the chocolate flavor of the cake. Doing with a bite of cake first then the sip of wine did not combine as well. The next thing was with the Lady Godiva coffee drink, sipping that after the cake transformed the Grand Marnier from orange to a notable apricot flavor. The sense of taste is interesting to play with sometimes.
Next time I am out this way, I will definitely be...
Read moreFirst time visiting this establishment on the evening of Saturday, 11/6/21 at @ 6:30PM ET. There were 2 parties waiting ahead of us. We were promptly greeted and informed that only reservations were being seated in the restaurant but that bar seating was first-come-first-serve with a full menu.
My friend and I found two spots at the bar and were promptly attended to from behind the bar by Leah, who arrived with a cloth to wipe our surface down, food menu and drink menu. She returned in about 5 minutes.
We placed an appetizer order for the mussels. I had the steak frites' and my friend the meatloaf. I also ordered a lemon drop mojito and my friend a beer.
The drink arrived within a couple of minutes. the apps arrived after about 10 minutes, and our main meals arrived as soon as we finished our app. If they weren't monitoring us, they did a perfect job of timing it.
The mojito was amazing! If I could describe it in one word it would be "balanced". Even my friend remarked on it being balanced w/o me saying anything. Spot on and delicious! Kudos to bartender (not sure if it was Leah or someone else). My only slight complaint was that it was served in a "highball" glass, which IMHO was rather small. It was also filled with ice above the rim. At $11US a pop, they could be more liberal with the drink. I had two.
The mussels were perfectly cooked and not one closed! I wasn't crazy about the lobster cream sauce in which they came but you get one pound so that is a bonus.
My steak frites' was a "Brasserie" style strip steak with a side of fries. It was... okay but not impressive. When an establishment advertises parmesan fries, I expect to get fries tossed in parmesan. Instead, I got an amount equivalent to about the size of MickeyD's small fries in a small metal basket and with about a tspn of parmesan dumped in the middle which had melted. But the fries themselves were perfectly cooked. The steak was about a 4-5 oz NY strip - rather small IMHO. I was surprised to find quite a bit of gristle on the steak. I hope their other "signature" steaks are of better quality. The steak was perfectly cooked to medium. My main meal was $29US.
My friend's meatloaf was absolutely delicious. It was a generous portion in, both, the meatloaf slice and the amount of mashed potatoes that came with it. She ate about half and took the rest home. Her meal was about $22US and quite honestly, looked yummier than my $30 meal.
For dessert, we opted for the pumpkin cheesecake. It was delicious - one moment tasting like pumpkin pie and the next like cheesecake. It was also a generous portion. Our only complain is that the cheesecake took about 15 min to arrive. The cheesecake was about $10US if I recall.
Overall, the experience was okay - not bad; not great. Leah was very attentive and efficient.
Started with 5 stars but reduced to 4 due to 1) size of drink; 2) gristley, small steak; 3) long wait for dessert.
Overall, I recommend Stoney River. But there are better options in the area at this high price point.
EDIT: Did a bit of googling and discovered SRS&G is part of J. Alexander Holdings. Also, if you google "lemon drop mojito" you find a youtube video by JAH on how to make that exact drink I had and the ratios are provided at the end....
Read moreI'm writing this review a week later... that should tell you something!!! My friend and I went to the restaurant on 10/24/20... Make a reservation! We did... it's just a tip! From the moment we walked into this establishment it was an awesome experience! I haven't had service this great in such a long time. Jazmyn, our waitress was AMAZING! She provided great suggestions for apps and drinks as we already were set on having steaks for dinner. Her attitude was great and she felt more like a friend and we were having dinner at her home. It didn't even feel like we were at a restaurant!!! Even the young man that brought our food blew our minds. He was sooooo polite when bringing our meal to the table. He made sure we had exactly what we needed and wanted to make sure we were comfortable before walking away. He wasn't even our server! The food!!!!! the spinach dip (photo below) was sooooooooooo good... I have no words! Oh.. and the bread that came to the table with the cinnamon butter... honey!!! Was soooo good! Now, I was sooooo skeptical and haven't had a steak cooked perfectly in almost ever... This steak was so perfect, I didn't want to eat it...lol... The herb butter that came with it... Let's just say, I got some to go... Don't sleep on the mac n cheese! But I was so jealous of not getting the baked potato, I'm definitely getting it next time. Shout out to the kitchen!!! I was so overwhelmed with this experience, I had to ask for the manager. I believe her name was Diamond! Whatever she's doing, she's doing it superbly! She has that place and her team in tip top shape! I could see how proud she was through her mask...I can't wait to go back and will definitely request that Jazmyn is our waitress every time! (she's not there Mon and Tues, I think).. I don't want to forget anything.... Ohhhh the drinks!!!! Babyyyyyy!!! We had the lemon drop martini, the matador, and one fine day (these are drinks on the menu) never had drinks that I didn't have to complain about until I was at Stoney River! Soooooo good! I'm allergic to seafood, so there's that... Didn't feel rushed at all... You know how you can go to some restaurants and when you finish eating, you're ready to go... nope, not here... soooo good! Love the atmosphere! I WILL BE BACK!!! Thanks Jazmyn, Jordan, and Diamond for a great experience! You all...
