St Melany's Byzantine Catholic Church — Local services in Tucson

We felt really welcomed by everyone at St. Melenys this Pentecost Sunday. The liturgy of Divine Worship is quite different from what we are used to as Latin Rite Catholics, but we definitely felt the historical Church present at St. Melenys. This was my first Byzantine experience, though I found some similarities with the Norbertines we have at home (kissing of Icons, focus on chant, making the sign of the cross at mention of the Trinity). The chant at St Melenys does not follow the western tradition of being more monotone; it instead has more of a range and also more flourishes which make it harder to sing if you aren't a regular. We still found it quite engaging. Thank you for the hospitality and we regret not being able to stay for fellowship afterwards. Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

I am a Latin rite Catholic in the area on military TDY. Went to Mass (or should I say Divine Liturgy) today at St Melany’s. It was my first Byzantine rite Mass (have attended Maronite and Syro-Malabar in the past). I did a little research before arriving, but met a very helpful parishioner who walked me through some of the peculiarities given my Roman habits. The church was beautiful. Icons, candles, and incense. Such emphasis on the Holy Trinity and Theotokos! I followed along as best I could with the chant, which was supported by a lovely choir. The entire experience was reverent. Lots of young families, and the parishioners made me feel welcome. Monsignor’s homily was based on the day’s readings and was enlightening/challenging.

I'm Roman Catholic, but I visited and was welcomed with open arms. 2 different Church members spoke with me before service and one of them sat with me near the front to answer any questions I might've had during service. I really enjoyed their Divine Liturgy and will definitely visit again - much love to my Byzantine Catholic...
