Lovely local bookstore who either stocks or can order any book you need! Leave your drink at the door and sanitize your hands so you can get to browsing! Their new bigger location is accessible with a stroller, wide aisles, no steps. I usually browse the kids section and there’s a big variety of classics and newer titles. I am able to find books with characters of color (Ruth Forman, The Pinkneys, Anti-Racist Baby, Have I Told You Black Lives Matter?) which is important to me. I usually end up with a pile of 4-5 excellent titles that I narrow down to 1-2 to take home :) When I am ordering books online, I try to find them on subterranean’s website in order to support a local business. They can get pretty much anything. Shipping is slightly slower than Prime but it’s worth the wait to feel better about my purchase.

Love this neighborhood bookstore in The Loop. Staff is always very helpful and their new space makes shopping easier. Ran into today to grab a book before heading to the airport. Asked the staff for recommendations and ended up buying 3 books I couldn’t decide between. The service and good feels of being IN a bookstore is 100% better than clicking buy now on Amazon.

Really lovely bookstore with wide range and availability. Loved the notes from staff along the shelves and the local shop puppy holding down the fort. They have a neat discount for staff picks and I was surprised by the large kids section. Prices were reasonable and the bookkeepers were friendly!

Subterraean Books moved a few years ago because the Loop Trolley is killing what was a fantastic commerce and entertainment district most of my life. But I digress. The staff is helpful, friendly, and as always, likes to talk about books. The curation of titles is still one of the best in the area, especially considering their now more limited shelf space (their old location a few doors down was larger.) And the shop pup is awesome.

I always love going to brick and mortar local bookstores because no matter how many recommendations you get, an algorithm isn't as good as a good bookseller, and just like usual, we found a lot of unexpected gems and some small press surprises (note, they have a very nice very small press section. 10/10, very small presses. Did buy from that rack.) They have a Booktok section because that's important now I guess, and there is not the eponymous shop cat, but a cute wiggly little shop dog greeted us when we walked in the door.

Still one of the best, and my favorite, independent...

This is my favorite bookstore in St. Louis. My wife and I have a tradition of coming here every year for my birthday and she buys me a book. I love this bookstore so much that sometimes I have to avoid walking past it or else I will buy something! I like to support this business over big chain bookstores because they offer a very personal and nuanced experience. The employees will leave reviews on little notecards next to the books they have read to help you find something you might like. The place isn't large, but what they do carry is first rate. Subterranean Books also does a great job of carrying books that are relevant, or currently being discussed on outlets like NPR, on their shelves. They also have a rewards program for geeks like me that can't stop...
