Subterraean Books moved a few years ago because the Loop Trolley is killing what was a fantastic commerce and entertainment district most of my life. But I digress. The staff is helpful, friendly, and as always, likes to talk about books. The curation of titles is still one of the best in the area, especially considering their now more limited shelf space (their old location a few doors down was larger.) And the shop pup is awesome.
I always love going to brick and mortar local bookstores because no matter how many recommendations you get, an algorithm isn't as good as a good bookseller, and just like usual, we found a lot of unexpected gems and some small press surprises (note, they have a very nice very small press section. 10/10, very small presses. Did buy from that rack.) They have a Booktok section because that's important now I guess, and there is not the eponymous shop cat, but a cute wiggly little shop dog greeted us when we walked in the door.

Read moreLovely local bookstore who either stocks or can order any book you need! Leave your drink at the door and sanitize your hands so you can get to browsing! Their new bigger location is accessible with a stroller, wide aisles, no steps. I usually browse the kids section and there’s a big variety of classics and newer titles. I am able to find books with characters of color (Ruth Forman, The Pinkneys, Anti-Racist Baby, Have I Told You Black Lives Matter?) which is important to me. I usually end up with a pile of 4-5 excellent titles that I narrow down to 1-2 to take home :)

Read moreThis is my favorite bookstore in St. Louis. My wife and I have a tradition of coming here every year for my birthday and she buys me a book. I love this bookstore so much that sometimes I have to avoid walking past it or else I will buy something! I like to support this business over big chain bookstores because they offer a very personal and nuanced experience. The employees will leave reviews on little notecards next to the books they have read to help you find something you might like. The place isn't large, but what they do carry is first rate. Subterranean Books also does a great job of carrying books that are relevant, or currently being discussed on outlets like NPR, on their shelves. They also have a rewards program for geeks like me that can't stop...
