Definitely more a pawn shop than a jeweler. I recently brought in a black diamond tennis bracelet asking for the broken clasp to be repaired. The individual I dealt with said it would probably cost about $50 to repair just the clasp and that the metal used to repair it would not match the silver it was set in and that he could not polish it, so it would look rough and discolored - for $50. I then told him that I had several other items that I would like to get PRICED and possibly sell some of them, each of them set in either white gold, yellow gold or sterling silver all with either diamonds, real pearls or other precious stones. A lot of it was presented to him in the original boxes, most with the original certificates of authenticity. He yanked each of them out of the boxes, pulling the pendants off of the chains and made four piles. The first pile was "worthless" only because they were sterling silver, despite having natural diamonds, pearls or other precious stones (not lab created) and pushed that pile back to me. The next pile was the pendants and earrings. He said he can't price them with the stones in them and would have to pry the stones out to get a weight so he could figure out a price, but could not reset them if I decided to not sell them. I asked him what types of stones they were, and for each one he basically said, "I don't know. Maybe sapphire," or "maybe amethyst" or "maybe ruby" but he either didn't know or didn't care. The other two piles (chains or pieces with no stones) he said were meltable, but he couldn't really price them without weighing all of the pieces without the stones. Last, I showed him a 3/4 karat colorless, near flawless, clarity VVS GIA certified natural diamond set in a platinum cathedral setting. He offered me $250. It was bought retail for over $4,000 20 years ago, and was last insured for $8,600. He also said he'd offer me "a few hundred dollars for everything else." I thanked him for his time and told him that I'd just hold onto to them for now, and that I'd wait on repairing the bracelet because $50 sounded like a lot for shoddy workmanship. So he took out a couple of plastic ziplock bags, threw all of the jewelry in them then shoved all of the empty boxes and untouched paperwork at me and walked away to continue the conversation with his co-workers that I apparently interrupted when I walked in. Now, I'm not naive - I know how pawn shops work. Their only goal is to make a sizeable profit in exchange for lowballing desperate customers who will take pennies on the dollar, but I'm not somebody who was desperate for money and actually started out looking to simply get a bracelet repaired and pricing the other pieces. It was insulting considering that they call themselves a jewelry shop yet couldn't properly repair a bracelet, are unable to identify precious stones, could not provide any pricing for anything, treated my jewelry like it was junk by carelessly just stuffing it in ziploc bags and offering basically two days pay for items with extremely higher values. If you prefer the pawn shop treatment, this is the place to be. If you want a jewelry store that treats you and your jewelry with respect, go elsewhere or hop into a time machine to a time before they decided to completely immerse themselves into the...
