My wife suffered from blood clots. She had open heart surgery to remove blood clots from her heart and lungs. They had found a lump in her breast. It was cancer! Open heart surgery was done 12/2022. A few months later, we met with Dr.Lagare, the oncologist at the hospital. My was very comfortable with him. She received chemo at the Westerly hospital Smilow treatment center. The staff at the Smilow center were absolutely fantastic! They were very nice to my wife and anyone that stayed with her during chemo. Over the course of the chemo, my wife developed problems. The problems were not unusual when receiving chemo. She required hospitalization more and more due to the effects of the chemo. While getting ready to leave the house for a appointment at the hospital, she fell and fractured her leg. She spent about 2 weeks in the hospital. That incident started a snowball effect, where she ended up spending almost 5 months in the hospital. That's a total of 5 months out of out of the entire year of 2023. This included a few stays in ICU. She would be discharged and come home for what ended up being short stays at home. Over the course of time, I had to leave my job to care for her. She had nurses, physical and occupational therapists coming to the house. Due to many health problems, she hadn't walked in a long time. Over the course of time, we were introduced to Dr.McCormick. She had reviewed my wife's medical records and developed a course of testing. Along with Dr.McCormick came Dr.Kahn. Between the two doctors, I felt that she was in good hands. At one point when the physical therapist was at the house, she took my wife's blood pressure. It was very low. She advised my wife that she needs to be seen by the doctors at the hospital immediately! To make a long story short, my wife would refuse to go when the ambulance would come for her. Her refusal was due to how much time she had already spent in the hospital. They won't take a patient if the patient refuses to go. The nurse and therapists all called for the ambulance a total of 8 times. Due to her medical condition, I couldn't take her to the hospital because she couldn't walk. I finally got her to go to the hospital. I forgot to mention that she needed to have surgery for the breast cancer. She never was well enough for the surgery. She wasted precious time by not allowing anyone to take her to the hospital in a timely manner. The last time she was hospitalized, we would see Dr.McCormick and Dr.Kahn more often than we used to. Dr.McCormick sat with us and suggested that we should consider hospice care. That knocked the wind out of both of us. I knew that my wife was in really bad shape but I had always thought she'd beat all the problems that developed. The doctor explained that the problems she was having, would most likely keep happening to her. My wife and I discussed hospice care. I said I thought she could beat the problems. My wife let me know that she was tired and wanted me to put her into hospice care. I spoke with Dr.McCormick and asked a lot of questions. She stated that, short of a miracle, she would die from her ongoing problems. I signed the authorization for hospice on 2/2/2024 which was a Friday. My wife died Monday 2/5/2025. My wife was 50 years old when she passed. I left out quite a bit of information, details and names to make a long story short. I want thank both Anne and Ann (oncology), both are social workers at the hospital. Both assisted me with paperwork and other things that we needed. You two made a miserable situation tolerable! THANK YOU! Overall all, my wife and I were both happy with the care from the staff at Westerly hospital!!! I would like to thank the cafeteria, front desk and Coumadin clinic staff. Every CNA, nurse, imaging staff and doctors that worked or assisted with my wife's care, THANK YOU!!! Thank you for taking great care of my love! You all made a terrible situation tolerable for us. Please continue the great care that we received! Sorry for...
Read moreWell let me just start by saying i absolutely refuse to go to this hospital. This Saturday that’s just had past didn’t really have much of a choice I had no way to get to south county or RI hospital. I even told the triage nurse that’s where i normally go she says well why didn’t you go there. I brushed it off since it was 5am my whole reason for the visit was cuz I was an still having chest pain, headaches, feeling woozy an light headed, having issues with my throat (trouble swallowing, spitting up blood, the feeling of something stuck in my throat). I was there maybe less than an hour between check to discharge mind you the computers were down too but seemed to be working ok for them to take my new insurance info. I’m also a type 2 diabetic as well an a little over a year ago I went in there with some of the same issues with my throat trouble swallowing an the feeling of something or food stuck they did a soft tissue x-ray of my neck an throat said everything was fine but in the x-ray you could clearly see I had a bulge/mass an was told everything is fine I just scratched/irritated my throat no other tests like blood work or ct scan was done of my throat an when things didn’t seem to get better an was having chest pain again I went back this dr was a lot better he ran tests but no blood work tho he did a ct scan of my chest an x-ray but not a ct scan of my throat since I was saying that was still bothering me an it came back as to me having “gerd” so almost 3 months down the road I’m still having issues with my throat an I have a massive lump in my neck so I went to a different hospital they did a ct scan of my throat an found I had a infected thyroglossal duct cyst had it treated an removed but having similar issues again along with the chest pain an woozy/dizzy feeling for my visit Saturday the dr that seen me DID NOT do or run any tests other than feel to see if my glands were swollen an look at my throat an told me that there is something going around an prescribed me antibiotics that make my gerd an symptoms way worse an while waiting for my ride I’m reading these posters an signs on the walls of the waiting room saying how they are there to help an all about caring an take pride in helping people get better I’m sorry but actions speak louder than signs an posters cuz all I ever get when I go there is treated horribly and it’s way worse for the people who have had addiction problems in the past or are on some sorta medical assisted recovery (suboxone or methadone) an most these people have been clean for year/years an just trying to seek...
Read moreI came to this hospital because I had fallen on my knee and could not walk . I had to have an ambulance come to my home to get me out of my room and to the hospital . I get to the hospital and the first nurse that I had was very good. I got my cray done and the physician came to go over results and check my knee and then send me home . I did tell them that I cannot move my leg at all so I would not be able to use crutches ,get in a car and get myself up 2 flights of stairs to get inside my apartment. I cannot even use the bathroom . At that point they said they would keep me overnight and then see a physical therapist the next morning . My husband came a while later to bring me something to eat . At that point the next crew of nurses and dr was on shift .The nurses came in an immediately said that if they need help room , they are putting me in the hallway. This is not what I was told from previous crew and that was pretty upsetting . My husband had questions and asked for a patient advocate . It seemed like they did not want to hear about me wanting one . When explaining to the physician about me not being able to walk upstairs or use the bathroom at home , he said that it was not his problem. My husband asked other questions and they were saying how rude he was and that he needed to leave . They did call the police and so I told my husband to just leave because we are getting nowhere with this . I even tried one more time to get up and see if I could use a crutch to get out of there as they made me feel uncomfortable . I will never come to this hospital again as many of the medical staff do not know how to treat people and have a very bad attitude . They could care less about a patient . That was made clear to me . I woke up this morning and was able to move my leg up and down. The PT came and helped me learn how to use the crutches. He was very nice and understanding. I was determined to just get out and get home. Overall, not a good experience . I am going make a formal complaint with...
