Sutherlands — Local services in Wichita

Went in to get a price match on cypress mulch and before I could even utter the retailer I wanted them to match, the lady at customer service promptly told me ‘No, it’s not the same’. I asked her how she could possibly know what that when she didn’t even know the place I wanted to match to which she rattled off something about Lowes. Home Depot’s carries literally the EXACT same mulch, but it wasn’t worth pressing the issue. Sutherland’s is just the place I go when ACE doesn’t have an odd or end and I don’t want to drive 20 minutes to a decent big box.

I actually don’t blame the lady, I would be apathetic if I worked for Sutherland’s too, the company is terrible - not just this store. Literally every Sutherland’s I’ve been to has made me realize that the only thing the company excels at is managing to occupy space that would be far better utilized by literally any other big box.

Some of the employees are great, but most are just there wandering the dimly lit, low ceilinged, soulless expanse of Sutherland’s as they struggle to make it to the end of their shift - which brings me to the shopping experience itself.

Between the terribly awkward lumber carts (which are about the only bulk goods carts you will find, unless you want to risk a knife fight for the one... ONE garden cart that I’m pretty sure is for the employees), cluttered shelves, and cheap knockoff products, I don’t know how they could make it much harder to be a consumer.

If you enjoy being spoken to condescendingly and insulted I highly recommend the Customer Service at Sutherlands! My husband and I own a business and our equipment gets put to heavy use. A shop vac we bought from them just wasn’t working for us and I wanted to see if there was anything they could do. We went through 2 of them in about 4 months. I was prepared to be told “no” but was surprisingly offered a refund, but what I did not ask for was the disrespect and snide remarks that came with it. If you need equipment or tools I highly recommend you drive a little further and go to HARBOR FREIGHT instead. I’m not affiliated with them at all. Harbor Freight is just simply the best. This place and their “customer service” is laughable...

They have lots of hardware and supplies but the service is just awful. Employees are not willing to help you even when you ask for help. I need directions on finding something in the store with no one realizing I was lost I asked two employees talking to each other at the front of the store and they were more interested in their conversation about trucks then to guide me, they pointed out a general direction where the item was and I spent 20 mins looking for it. Worth the extra 5 min drive to ACE Hardware they have all the same stuff and a great staff that is willing to show you the location of the product you are...
