Where would you visit first? 🥧🍷🇵🇹

The last travel of 2022 was an epic 2 weeks road trip across Portugal in December and it stole a piece of my heart! Portugal was long planned for fall in 2020 but as you all know, it had to be cancelled like most other trips of that year!
Fast forward to winter 2022, when we could finally reschedule our vacation and oh boy.. it was the best decision for our holidays!
𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥?
✦ Portugal experiences a Mediterranean climate which is why it generally has mild to warm winters.
✦ The average high temperature rises up to 15-18°C (59-65F) during the daytime. While in Algarve we were blessed with 24°C (75F) warm sunny days that it felt like summer!
✦ Enjoying all the epic places with little to no tourists even at mid day felt AMAZING!
✦ The country also decks up so well for the Christmas holiday & New year that you are never missing out all the festive spirits!
✦ Portugal is a budget friendly country to visit but during winter season you can avail even cheaper accommodations & attractions!
✦ During winter season, the north of Portugal tends to be a bit colder and wetter than the south! But throughout our 2 weeks time, it only rained one afternoon in Braga that affected a bit of the sightseeing!
Have you been to Portugal? If not, is this in your bucket list?✈️

Harika bir eser. Çok etkileyici. En alttan en üste kadar tüm merdivenlerini tek tek çıktım. Ortalık turist kaynıyor. Adamlar bu işi biliyor kardeşim.
Built in a complex assemblage of architectural styles, it follows that nearly a century passed before the majority of Bom Jesus was completed. Each feature of the site contains its own symbology, independent of the others, making the entire site packed with visually arresting, bizarre details. The staircases themselves are Baroque in style, with granite steps and a white façade. Take for instance, the perpetually-flowing fountains found on the staircases’ landings. It would be easy to miss that each is dedicated to one of the five senses (touch, smell, taste, sight, sound), the effect of which can be incredibly disconcerting on an individual level when removed from the collective whole.
Or, to cite another example, each zig-zagging staircase pivot becomes an octagonal oratory, inside of which is a life-size diorama from the day leading up to the crucifixion of Christ. To Catholics, this is simply known as the “Stations of the Cross” but to the uninitiated, the gruesome realism in which these scenes are rendered lends the aesthetic beauty of Bom Jesus a wholly unnerving and startling quality.
After climbing all 577 steps – on foot or knee, the latter of which continues to be preferred by traditionalists – the Stations of the Cross culminate inside the sanctuary church perched atop the mountain. Designed by local architect André Soares and built by Carlos Amarante, the church was meant as an impressive replacement for a series of modest chapels shown by records to have occupied the mountain from the 14th century onward. Inside, Jesus has arrived at his destiny upon the cross, flanked by Mary, and Pontius Pilate’s soldiers. Looking up to the rafters offers a less bleak view, including an elegantly painted central dome surrounded by leaded glass. Meanwhile the Sanctuary’s surrounding grounds afford visitors the opportunity to roam manicured gardens while absorbing breathtaking views of the nearby city of Braga.
Everything about climbing Bom Jesus feels like an adventure mixed with a gothic rune hunt, but the option to descend by way of funicular may be the most purely delightful element of the visit. The car itself was built in 1882 and continues to this day to be powered entirely by water, making it completely energy neutral. For a mere €1, the funicular transports passengers up and/or down the nearly 1,000 foot slope in just three minutes.
At the time of one reporter’s visit, the mature, jovial funicular operator was tasked with both operating the tram and photographing tourists atop a stuffed horse outside the Sanctuary, using a hooded camera and wooden tripod system that appeared to be as old as the funicular itself.

I recently visited **Bom Jesus do Monte** in Braga, Portugal, and it was an unforgettable experience. This stunning sanctuary is not only a religious site but also a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and natural beauty.
**What I Loved:**
✔ **Breathtaking Staircase** – The iconic **Escadaria do Bom Jesus** is a highlight, with its intricate zigzag design, symbolic fountains (representing the Five Senses, the Three Virtues, and more), and lush greenery. Climbing the steps was a bit of a workout, but the views made it worth it!
✔ **Panoramic Views** – At the top, the **view over Braga** is absolutely spectacular. On a clear day, you can see for miles, making it a perfect spot for photos.
✔ **Peaceful Atmosphere** – Despite being a popular attraction, the gardens and wooded areas around the sanctuary offer a tranquil escape. The **forest trails** and small lakes add to the serene vibe.
✔ **Funicular Ride** – For those who prefer not to climb, the historic **water-powered funicular** (one of the oldest in the world!) is a charming alternative.
✔ **Beautiful Basilica** – The church itself is elegant, with well-preserved interiors and a calm, spiritual ambiance.
### **Minor Downsides:**
⚠ **Crowds** – It can get quite busy, especially on weekends and holidays. I’d recommend visiting early in the morning for a quieter experience.
⚠ **Physical Effort** – The staircase is impressive but can be tiring for some visitors. The funicular is a great option, though!
### **Final Thoughts:**
Bom Jesus do Monte is a **must-visit** in northern Portugal. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, nature, or just stunning views, this place has it all. I left feeling amazed and would definitely return!
**Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)** – A true gem in Braga!

🏴Bon Jesus de Monte is an absolute treasure that should not be missed when you're in the North of Portugal. To get there, I highly recommend taking the bus from Braga city center, as it's a convenient way to arrive. The fact that it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017 speaks volumes about its significance.
The journey begins with a spectacular flight of stairs that serves as a grand entrance to this majestic religious site. As you ascend, the sense of wonder and peace gradually envelops you. Upon reaching the top, the view is nothing short of breathtaking. The vantage point offers panoramic vistas that are sure to leave an indelible mark on your memory.
What truly stood out to me was the serene and charming ambiance of Bon Jesus de Monte. It's a place where one can truly escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and find solace in its beauty. During my visit, I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of crowds, which allowed for a more intimate and personal experience.
In summary, Bon Jesus de Monte is an enchanting destination that seamlessly combines religious significance, architectural splendor, and natural beauty. Its UNESCO status is well-deserved, and I can confidently say that this site is a must-visit for anyone exploring the North of Portugal.

Damn amazing trip to this beautiful place. Admission is free, only the ride on the cogwheel train has to be paid for (2 euros per trip, 3 euros for the return trip).
I really recommend this place, it's THE highlight in Braga. By bus to the valley station. I walked all the way - my god it was hard in this temperature. There is a hotel next to the church. I think I'll book it for a day or two next time.
If you hike the path down, can you taking great photos of the stairs and the chruch
Santuario do Bom Jesus do Monte monuments The Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary can be reached either on foot, by car or by cog railway, an amazing feat of 19th-century engineering. The railway was the first of its kind in Portugal and was built in 1882. Even today, it overcomes the 300 meters in altitude in just 3 minutes with the help of hydropower. The church was built later (1784) to a design by Carlos Amarante, who opted for the neoclassical style of Italian inspiration.

A Spiritual Retreat at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Monument North of Porto
Nestled amidst the rolling hills north of Porto, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Monument stands as a majestic symbol of faith and a testament to Portugal's rich religious heritage. Visiting this monument was a deeply moving experience that combined spiritual reflection with cultural appreciation.
As you approach the monument, the towering statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus becomes a focal point against the serene backdrop of the Portuguese countryside. The statue's outstretched arms seem to embrace the landscape, offering a sense of peace and welcome to all who visit. The site provides breathtaking panoramic views, making it a perfect spot for contemplation and photography alike.
The atmosphere is imbued with tranquility, enhanced by the well-maintained gardens and pathways that invite you to explore at a leisurely pace. The gentle rustling of leaves and the distant songs of birds add to the serene environment, creating a haven away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
One of the highlights of our visit was the exceptional service provided by Tita, a gracious guide whose warmth and knowledge enriched our experience. Tita's genuine enthusiasm for sharing the monument's history and significance was evident in every story she told. Her personal touch transformed our visit from a simple tour into a heartfelt journey through local traditions and spiritual insights.
Adding to the uniqueness of the experience, we were treated to a tasting of wine grown by Tita's father. This family-produced wine was nothing short of delightful—full-bodied with a rich aroma, it captured the essence of the region's viticultural heritage. Knowing that the wine came from Tita's own family vineyard added a layer of intimacy and authenticity that is rare to find.
The monument's chapel offers a quiet space for prayer and reflection. Its simple yet elegant design complements the grandeur of the statue outside. Inside, soft lighting and minimalist décor create an atmosphere conducive to meditation, allowing visitors to connect on a deeper spiritual level.
Despite the monument's grandeur and the personalized service, the visit is remarkably affordable. There are no hefty entrance fees, and any contributions are directed towards the upkeep of the site and supporting local initiatives. This reasonable pricing ensures that the monument remains accessible to a wide range of visitors, from solo travelers to families and pilgrimage groups.
The overall environment is both welcoming and homely. The combination of the staff's friendliness, the personal anecdotes shared, and the family-grown wine tasting makes you feel more like a guest than a tourist. It's this sense of genuine hospitality that leaves a lasting impression and embodies the spirit of Portuguese culture.
In conclusion, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Monument north of Porto is a destination that offers more than just visual splendor—it provides a heartfelt experience enriched by exceptional service and personal touches. Tita's guidance, the family-produced wine, and the serene environment come together to create a visit that is both memorable and spiritually fulfilling.
Highly recommended for its outstanding service, reasonable prices, and the unique opportunity to engage with local traditions. Whether you're on a spiritual journey or simply exploring the cultural landscapes of Portugal, this monument is a must-visit that promises to leave a lasting imprint on your heart.

Absolutely beautiful 😍 We had a blast going up to the 🔝! When we were there the elevator was not working so we climbed up the stairs. You need to be able to go up stairs for a good 5 - 10 minutes or maybe more! There is one spot that shows you a green light to go and a red light to stop 🛑 so the ones going the opposite direction can get through because it’s that TIGHT!! But once your up on the top you have an incredible view 😊
We went at sunset 🌅 that made it even more gorgeous! Although a little nerve wracking the beach view is spectacular! 🌟♥️🌟
We parked our RV here at the top of the hill no problem about a 5 minute walk from the church!

Located at the top of the mountain of Santa Luzia is considered as a main tourist attraction of the city. It has several nice viewpoints nearby, that include the river Lima, the ocean and the city.
It was built in 1959 (55 years of work).

Architecturally, it is of Romanesque-Byzantine inspiration, fitting into the revivalist architecture that marked the turn of the century. Its imposing rose windows are the largest in the Iberian Peninsula and the second largest in Europe.
You can reach the top of the Monte de Santa Luzia by funicular (elevator), by car or by climbing the steps. This place dominates an important part of the Lima river valley and a large stretch of the seashore to the north and south of the estuary, as well as the green mountain range. This panorama has been rated by the National Geographic Magazine as the third most beautiful in the World.

Definitely a must see when visiting Braga. We didn't expect such a monumental place. I cannot even say I "liked" it. The area is huge and overdimensioned and gives a very special feeling. Maybe comparable with former Nazi Rally Ground in Nuremberg. It makes you think. Portugal must have a very special relation with the catholic church. You need to be there and feel. Pick a sunny day and plan several hours.
Bom Jesus is another important catholic place nearby, you could combine the visit, but maybe you shouldn't, because the impact is totally different.

This is one of Portugal’s most important Marian pilgrimage sites, located atop Monte Sameiro. It began in 1863 when Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva of the Archdiocese of Braga erected a small monument to commemorate the 1854 proclamation of the Immaculate Conception. Construction of the main church began in 1863, with a new expansion in 1890, and the sanctuary was eventually completed in the 20th century in Neoclassical style. Major pilgrimages are held annually on the first Sunday of June and the third Sunday of August.
