Sorrento Restaurante is an upscale restaurant in the Puerto Madero section of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Raul, the host, greeted me with a smile and great English and offered me a choice of tables. I chose the one by the water. It was cold the night I visited so the partition was closed but this seat, on warmer days, opened to the beautiful outside promenade on the Rio Dique.

My server was very friendly and attentive. A great meal always starts with a cocktail, so I ordered a Belvedere martini, dry. I asked for blue cheese stuffed olives. They did not have them, but they ended up bringing me a slab of delicious blue cheese to add to my olives. I created my own, so in the end I wound up getting what I wanted. Extra points to them for going over and above to accommodate my cocktail condiment request!

I decided on the fixed, 3 course menu for $39,000 Argentinian Pesos.

For the appetizer I ordered the Spanish garlic shrimp. It arrived bubbling hot. It was a little short on flavor but was perfect for dipping my hot, fresh bread into.

I chose steak au poivre for the main course. The steak was done perfectly but the flavor was a little flat. The accompanying creamed potatoes were delicious.

The meal came with dessert, so I chose the passionfruit cheesecake. I only had a few bites as I was full, but it was tough to not finish it. It was very good.

The service was amazing, but the appetizer and main course was a little flat. For that reason, I will be giving 4 stars in my review. I would go back again to try something...

Strangely enough, Buenos Aires is not known for its seafood (but you can get that here). This seafood restaurant on the Porto Madero is rare and exquisite. The locale is among our favorites in this magnificent city. This particular location along the old docks is quieter and holds several refined eateries. We started our dinner at the Sorrento with some raw oysters and a fine bottle of Argentinian Chardonnay. Oysters in this part of the world are strong and salty and these lived up to their reputation. I personally prefer the milder variety from North America. Then they brought us the main event, a small mountain of grilled mussels, shrimp, scallops, calamari, and fish for two. I truly believe it could have fed four. The flavor delightful, with overtones of smoke and sea. After a month of consuming kilos of grilled carne, this meal was a welcome respite. I would not be overstating it if I said that our dining experience was prepared and delivered with the utmost care, professionalism, and politeness that is possible. This dinner will remain embedded in our hearts with all our memories of...
