Chao Chow at TTP offers a refreshing twist on traditional Chinese dining with its innovative approach to hotpot. As a former patron of now-closed hotpot establishment Chao Chow on Gouger Street, stumbling upon Chao Chow at TTP was a delightful surprise. Unlike the traditional hotpot experience, where ingredients are cooked at the table, Chao Chow introduces a DIY concept where diners select their ingredients from an array of fresh vegetables, seafood, and meats, all priced by weight. This modern take on hotpot, dubbed MaLaTang, boasts a fast-paced dining experience without compromising on flavor or quality. The name itself, derived from 'Ma' for numbness, 'La' for spiciness, and 'Tang' for hot, perfectly encapsulates the fiery sensation one can expect. During my visit, I opted for the hot broth, and it had a rich flavor profile. Moreover, the quick service and attentive staff ensured that empty containers were promptly filled. Read moreWow. When we left the food court we were nothing short of impressed. We got 3 hotpot bowls, all choosing our own ingredients including seafood, meats, vegetables, mushrooms, rice cakes, etc. and paid by weight. We purchased 2 malatang bowls, 1 laksa bowl, and 3 bottles of water and in total the cost amounted to around $80.
You can choose from a variety of broths to have the staff cook your ingredients in, such as Malatang, Tom Yum, Laksa, Miso, or Dry/Stir Fried. You can also choose spice levels of No Spice, Mild, Hot, Fire and Volcano.
The serving sizes were huge, so if you have a smaller stomach then definitely don’t get too many ingredients. Overall, we were very impressed by the experience and price and will definitely return next time...

The Laksa was nice and had a really tasty broth. However, my recent visit wasn't the same. The broth was terrible, and the strong MSG flavor really turned me off. Probably won't be coming here again due to the terrible food.
