The Gilbert Street Hotel is a special old-school pub in the city. It does not have a pokies room! By all accounts, this is a craft beer enthusiast’s go-to pub. You can check-in the beer you have tried on some beer app. The vibe on a Friday night is great with a DJ playing music not too loud. On weekends there is a band. They are famous for their Thursday night wings - reservations are required. They have a good selection of food that is well-priced but I recommend the steak and Caesar salad that comes with a 60-degree egg. On Sundays, residents in the neighbourhood get a discount. Their local (ie SA) wines by the glass are well selected. What is there not to love?

Dropped in for a quick evening meal and ordered the Char Grilled Broccoli - King Brown mushroom XO + sunflower seed ‘risotto’ + peanut Gochujang sauce + puffed wild rice. I paired this with a McLaren Vale Shiraz. The wine was balanced and quite delightful. The food somewhat less so - enjoyed the sunflower seed 'risotto' puffed wild rice with the peanut sauce but the broccoli was a tad underdone . . However an interesting meal from a menu that featured choices that I will certainly try on my next visit. I also enjoyed the live Jazz on the night - a great atmosphere. The GSH is a place that could easily become one of your favourite establishments . .

We ordered the grilled prawns which are fabulous the fried chicken to die for ,the potato Brava’s which was a massive serve which could’ve actually been slightly smaller and would still be happy it Could’ve done with some garnish just to add colour and the fried cauliflower which was probably not the best of what we ate but ruined by the sauce. The house wine was a large glass at $15. We came here on a Friday night. It was quite busy as it should be but we’re able to sit in a quiet section near the kitchen. Watching the kitchen staff… We were pretty happy and certainly would recommend this place to anyone.

Went in on Friday night, got a fish and chip meal. Fish was undercooked and tasted odd, like it was steamed. The batter was soft. Give a bit to the girlfriend to taste and she said the same, it's mushy like. And its like undercooked. I was worried about getting Ill from it.

I took the meal to the young man who took my order, and highlighted this. He took it to the kitchen. They said it was the type of fish and it's ok. Young man gave no option to put right. I asked for meal to be replaced or recooked. But no resolution offered.

He returned to meal to me. I reluctantly finished it as I paid for it. My order was over $40 plus girlfriends whose was a lot more.

This is very poor customer service. When a customer highlighs something you listen, and address the issue. Not dismiss it and think you know better. My first time in here, bad experience. I won't be going back. I didn't argue about it, as not one to cause a scene. But deal with customer issues better in future, maybe retraining is needed for the staff. Poor experience.

Definitely CANNOT recommend this venue. And its not a cheap...

What's wrong with the bar staff? My boss flew in from QLD on a Monday and I wanted to take her somewhere cool, casual and Adelaide. Picked the Gilbert bc I had been once before and liked it. However I think it's been sold and done up since, coz it wasn't the same vibe, and the bar staff were easily the most joyless, charmless, graceless bunch I've ever encountered. Couldn't get a smile out of any of them. Despite there being about five guys working we waited ages at the empty bar for either of two to bother stopping whatever chore they were doing and serve a customer. (And the one who did eventually move served the woman who had arrived after me. Very bad bartending form) And the guy from whom we ordered food wouldn't make eye contact, was complaining to his mate about the 'new system' rather than engaging his customer, and referred to both me and my boss, when speaking to either of us, as 'She'. As in "is SHE ordering food too?" Food was ok, ambiance was cool, but I'll take people I like to the Franklin next time. Their staff know...

Usually pop in here every few weeks for a drink as it’s on my way home, usually quiet in the beer garden and nice to chill. Tried to book for the wings night, called their number 6 times in 4 days, at varying times off peak service hours and not once was the phone even answered. No one even picked up the phone. Showed up on wings night anyway hoping for the best and had a date with my partner planned there. When I asked about the wings I was told to book in advance - I explained that I had tried to call 6 times and if a booking is necessary maybe they should answer the phone. The bartender said that “they are humans, not machines” and can’t answer every phone call due to being busy.

Have worked in hospitality for over 8 years and managed some of the busiest night clubs and cocktail bars in Australia, would be absolutely disgusted if my staff ever spoke to someone like that. Paying $15 for a house vodka + redbull and literally the rudest customer service I’ve ever experienced I just left and we went to a different venue...
