I saw Mascavado croissants all over my instagram feed so decided to attend the cafe before a day shopping in Rundle Mall.
When I arrived (approx 9am) there was a big que out the door and half of the tables were occupied with customers, the other half filled with dirty dishes from customers who had enjoyed their croissants and left. My sister and I waited a little for a free table or for a table to be cleaned. Whilst we were waiting we witnessed a few staff deliver coffees to occupied tables and return inside without taking dirty dishes back to clear a table. At this point my sister decided to bring the dishes inside to the staff, who did say thank you, but still didnt get the hint to come out and remove all of the dirty dishes for the rest of the patrons to sit and enjoy their food and drinks which was interesting.
Moving swiftly forward, I go and wait in line to order, the cafe is a long and narrow one so the line of customers is adjacent to the glass / counter displaying all of the wonderful looking croissants. Unfortunately, most of the croissants are on top of the glass counter, next to where people are lining up and having conversations probably unintentionally spitting on all of the croissants which is unfortunately grossly unhygienic in any setting nevermind post COVID. I decide on some options that are safely in the glass cabinet and fortunately the one I had my eye on from instagram was within the cabinet so was as hygienic as it could be. I cant complain about the croissants they seemed fresh and were very tasty however it is gross that they allow croissants to be spat on.
Whilst we were eating and drinking I noticed a group of girls (including one in a wheelchair) wondering up the street to come and enjoy some croissants. Obviously faced with the same confusion at all of the vacant tables with dirty dishes on them and hardly anywhere else to sit. Finally, some customers leave a low level table that the girls grab and then they were heading inside to go and order. Considering the layout of this cafe and the way customers are required to line up, any person in a wheelchair would never be able to line up in a peak time (which for this place is often). I will acknowledge there is a ramp that has probably installed for deliveries and not for inclusion but anyways) to add, any wheelchair bound person would not be able to even view all of the croissants that are on top, uncovered from the display cabinet that half of Adelaide have spit on, the girl on this occasion was left outside for her friends to order for her which is incredibly disappointing to witness. Noting it is 2024, not having an inclusive set up is honestly disgraceful and totally disrespectful.
Hopefully they can get a bigger place that is more customer centric focussed, hygienic and inclusive because the...
Read moreI recently had pleasure visiting this cute Mascavado cafe on Hutt street. It’s really good vibe there with open kitchen and sitting area with high ceiling, filled with smell of coffee, butter and sugar. Modern and chick. It was a nice weekday lunch so not crowded but pleasant in there.
I ordered mortadella pastry and strawberry croissant. They both gigantic in size, very filling. The mortadella pastry was superb. The pastry was soft and flaky, well balanced tomato and oregano sauce and ham with the sweetness of pastry goes well together, I could eat it forever. It would have been better if it was warmed up to the centre, because it was warm at the edge but cold in the centre. The strawberry croissant was a bit disappointing though, compared to to the massive size and gorgeous look, it was basically croissant with cream on top, with some strawberry. There is custard cream inside, but not much and you have to dig into it to look for…. None of it didn’t get along with the whole flavour, apart from the creamy texture, I was wondering why they are put together. The croissant itself was excellent though, I’d get just croissant only next time.
I kind of expected more flavour available in terms of cream filled croissants but none was available, which is probably what they are trying to do - getting customers to come back again, but well I’m not local so no more chance for me. Other than that, the service was good with...
Read moreI couldn't agree more with previous reviewers on the service of this place. The service was very confrontational and we could feel that we weren't welcomed. This place seems like it wants to appease a certain group of people, unfortunately I'm not one of them (lol...). The barista seems to have alot of "his mates" visiting him, and they tend to get first priorities than actual paying customers!! Our food came 33 mins after we ordered...not sure it takes that long to heat up a ham and cheese croissant (oh right!!! "his mates" that came after uswere being served first).
I could understand and turn a blind eye to the waitress who seemed to have struggled balancing the crowd (like 4 people) but overall she was ok.
The one thing I would not forget was the sly comment of the barista who mumbled "hopefully in a few years" as I was leaving the place with my wife after we said "thank you and see you soon." No problem....I hope to not see you in a few years too....
Cibo and Old Crossaint Factory down the road are always welcoming and serve great coffee and savory pies, I will always visit them in the...
