Being homeless was hard and I needed help. A friend suggested I seek assistance from the Hutt Street Centre. Walking through that door was scary and I was feeling anxious for the very first time in my life. Within 15 minutes the nerves had settled and I was able to shower and I was given all new clothing to wear. The lunch they fed us was absolutely awesome (roast pork with veggies + sweets). I could not believe what was happening. This place is incredible. The staff are so helpful and assist in so many ways. They do it with a smile and the majority are volunteers. These people genuinely care and the work they do is a credit to themselves and in my opinion they don't get the recognition they deserve for what they do for the homeless. An experience I will never forget and I can't thank them enough. What really saddens me about this amazing place is that there would be at least 80% of the states population that would not even know this place exists and what it does for the less fortunate amongst our community. So sad but so true. In my opinion the South Australian Government subsidy allocated to the Hutt Street Centre per annum is a paltry amount and is certainly far from satisfactory. If you have any house hold items that can be utilised by the Hutt Street Centre and the homeless, don't dump them, donate them. Yours truly...
Read moreHutt Street Centre is amazing 👏 After participating in the Walk a Mile in My Boots campaign, I was offered the opportunity to have a look around the Centre and also help out with preparing and serving lunch. This place thrives on the many volunteers who assist with the feeding of anywhere between 100 and 200 people at breakfast and lunchtime. They are called "angels" and it's not hard to see why. But this Centre provides a lit more than two hot meals on weekdays. They also offer showers, laundry facilities, mobile phone charging, storage lockers, a creative space and regular options to see medical specialists and counsellors etc. They also organise day trips a couple of times a month along with other programs. No wonder they are constantly on the lookout for ways to raise funds, especially as they are not receiving any government funding. It was a privilege to be part of the volunteer team for a day and I look forward to continuing my support through whatever...
Read moreI have had the most terrible experience involving the staff at the hut Street Centre. Upon entry on the hut Street Centre, there is an Asian gentleman who checks you in. Most of the time he's nice, but he wary because if you catch him in a bad mood, he will often swear and do other forms of deplorable behaviour towards you. Non-physical this is all verbal. I was falsely accused of drinking alcohol on premises when in fact I had a drinking bottle on me which I find utterly offensive. Having checked on other groups on Facebook, I can see that the hut Street Centre treat vulnerable people such as me. This place needs a government audit so the funding should go where it needs to be towards the people in need instead of the people that run the places and in...
