Right off the bat, I had extremely high expectations for A Hereford Beefstouw, but that's because the prices listed put you in mind of a seriously fine dining establishment. We were placed in a lovely spot, but couldn't really get comfortable because the large front door was blocked open, meaning the whole room was super cold. I understand on a lovely summers day, but not at 7pm in winter. The atmosphere was also made slightly strange by the fact that the music that was playing put me more in the mood to slam a few beers, not have a fancy dinner. We ordered a Carafe of house shiraz, it was delicious and reasonably priced. We decided on the Chateaubriand for 2 ($100), baked camembert and seasonal greens. The camembert came out slightly warm on the outside and stone cold in the centre. The greens were delicious but the serving size was small and there was only broccolini, beans and slivered almonds. The steak itself was tasty and cooked to our desired medium rare, but thanks to the price tag I was hoping it would be one of the best pieces of meat I've ever had, not just tasty. The complimentary chips, blue cheese butter and garlic butter were all good and definitely a nice touch. However the Béarnaise sauce seemed to be more of a hollandaise, as it was lacking tarragon and shallot flavour. I also learnt after the fact that the Béarnaise and Pepper sauce we ordered were a whopping 5 dollars each which for such a small serving size, is ridiculous. To finish we ordered a latte and a long macchiato which to be frank was a comedy of errors. We were delivered two almost identical drinks that were somewhere between a piccolo latte and a cappuccino...
All in all I'd say we left a little disappointed but content. Nothing was unacceptable, but nothing was sublime. For such a beautiful space, a few easy fixes to the atmosphere could transform the vibe completely. When we finished, we payed $90 a head and I can't say that food and experience overall matched that number. On our last night out at a similar style place we payed $140 a head and left so happy we're still talking about it to this day. So we're totally happy to pay that money, so long as the quality matches the price tag. Unfortunately, A Hereford...
Read moreHere for my 60th Birthday dinner with my wife. Booking for 6pm, we arrived about 605pm. Ordered drinks and then food. Stuck over against the wall next to a fire hose, which incidentally should be kept clear. Staff quite noisily discussing their personal lives across the floor. When meal came had to ask for another drink as had finished. they were not busy. Meal came and looked pretty flat sitting on the plate. I ordered the Ribeye 300gm (Medium) and my wife the single rack of ribs, also ordered potatoes and a rocket salad. Ribeye was quite thin one end, over done slightly and a little chewy. Other end was thicker, probably 3 times as thick and rare. I did eat it but left a large piece of gristle and a piece of the under cooked steak about an inch wide and the whole cut across. My wife's ribs were tender, a little dry, no sauce as advertised on the menu, she was ok with that. When the girl came to clear the plates she asked if everything was ok. I responded that my steak was rare at one end as she could see by the piece left on the plate. She apologised and asked if I would like dessert. I declined. My wife was having a sip of her drink and before she could answer the girl walked away saying something about the bill. A few minutes later she reappeared and placed the bill on our table and walked away. We were shocked but ignored it, continuing to talk. Moments later she reappeared with the eftpos and stood next to me indicating to pay. I had probably a third of my wine left and said "oh are we going are we?" . She replied yes i said i was getting the bill. My wife said she didnt ask her about desserts or coffee. The girl replied that she had asked me. I got up and walked out whilst my wife paid the bill. We walked back to our car which was a few blocks away. We got in the car and the clock said 707pm. We had been in the restaurant for probably and hour. What a disgrace and thanks for the $158 for a meal that we could get at a pub with better service and ambience for...
Read moreI've wanted to come to this establishment for quite some time & experience their wares, that opportunity recently arose when I celebrated my birthday with partner & friends. The evening had everything, from disappointments to triumphs, poor service oscillated between very good service, constant mistakes offset with immediate rectification. Our waiter had only been there 2 weeks so we were prepared to forgive his mistakes as he tried very hard. He served white wine at room temperature, we complained, he cited that the fridge had broken down, good thing I had the red, an excellent Coonawarra drop. Mm, I don't like excuses from a business that knows how to charge, such problems need to be FIXED. The initial bread was stale & hard, we ordered extra which was much better, but the waiter forgot the extra butter even though we asked. We ordered our meat dishes, the waiter forgot to ask everyone their sauce selection, again, we had to ASK. The food was very good quality, especially the rib eye, the dry aged rump was overrated & overstated, it was TOO dry, barely tender & bland. We were part of the first sitting till 8.30 pm, but were asked to vacate the table at 8.19 pm, this is a very poor advertisement for the restaurant. Fortunately there was a vacant table outside otherwise we would have refused to leave. More drinks, the champagne cool, not cold & devoid of bubbles which was immediately replaced. We all enjoyed the ambience, the other patrons were of good cheer & a beautiful balmy evening outside. The bill arrived & it wasn't cheap, BUT, strangely, we somehow enjoyed the evening & would come again IF they can serve cold drinks. I would recommend one tries this restaurant, a special occasion perhaps, it's worth a...
