Return visit and noticed the menu has changed quite a bit since the last time I was here - the selection is much larger and portions have improved too. We enjoyed a pretty filling and satisfying meal of:
L01 Taiwanese beef noodle soup, $18.90 R05 chef special minced pork rice, $8.50 (large) S06 deep fried chicken fillet, $9.90 SK07 deep fried corn croquette, $7.00 Total 44.30 for 2+1, but we had more food than needed so can order less next time.
The beef noodle soup was $16.90 in the menu but has recently had a price increase as per signage on the counter. At almost $20 now it’s a hefty price for noodles but is their chef’s special and has limited supply? Anyway, worth trying as it’s pretty good. The minced pork rice had sufficient pork and hit the spot for this Taiwanese staple. The chicken was fried superbly and my pick for highlight of the night - great crunch on the batter that was richly seasoned, paired with juicy meat inside.
My only slight disappointment was with the corn croquettes which weren’t croquettes at all! I should have paid more attention to the menu picture which showed that it comes in the form of a spring roll, and whilst not too bad for what it is, did not fit what I was hoping for in a croquette. The filling itself was also more of a chewy texture than the saucy/mashy content I’d expect in a croquette.
Nevertheless I’d say I was happy with this meal overall, and look forward to exploring more of the menu another time.
[Previous review] Visited with my family during their trial / soft opening period and tried: chef special mince pork rice (金礦滷肉饭), $7.50 Taiwanese dry noodle with special sesame sauce (麻酱面), $8 salt & pepper chicken fillet (去骨鸡排), $8.50 radish cake (萝卜糕), $6
We also received a free wintermelon tea ($2) with each meal as part of their trial period promotion. For $30 all up, there was a good amount of food for our family of 2+1.
The dish of the day was definitely the chicken fillet which was good value with its thick and juicy meat, coated with a nicely fried and flavoursome crust. The only letdown was it wasn't hot when it came out, suggesting it may have sat a while post-fryer before being served.
I don't particularly recommend the rest of the dishes: the mince pork rice had decent flavour but seemed to me too expensive for the portion; maybe worth trying once to see if you value it more highly the noodle was decent value for the portion but there was something about the sauce I didn't enjoy, though wifey thought it fine and happily ate it, so again maybe worth trying for yourself the radish cake was also expensive for the portion (8 thin pieces) - it came with a nice dipping sauce but I probably wouldn't order it again / would rather try other items on the deep fry items menu
All up I think the place has good potential but isn't yet an ultra compelling option in a sea of Asian eateries that is the hub of Sunnybank. Will be interested to see how they fare after being more settled and hopefully a tweaked menu.
Notes: menu I ordered from is valid for trial period only, and may be adjusted afterwards (I haven't yet seen any updated menus) order at counter upon entry no...
Read moreNew restaurant in the area. Very tasty food and the price tag is great! BUT, yes, there is but.
Cash only (ok, this was because "eftpos not working today". They told me it will be available later.) They gave me wrong order number and recipe, meaning, wrong order. Lucky I checked my items on the recipe. Three groups of people behind me were getting their food served. One group of people had finished theirs and left, I was still waiting. The waiting time was more than 50 minutes and I was the very first 5 in line. When I asked, they told me because the foods I ordered need more time to prepare. Fact: I saw people are getting the same food I ordered and they are actually wayyy behind my order. Bad organisation. The takeaway boxes were falling apart. My place is only 10 minutes away from this restaurant.
I have to say, the staff are friendly, the food is definitely beautiful and yummy (even tho I have to pick them up from the plastic bag as the takeaway boxes suck! They are still supper yummy!!!). However, don't do takeaway, especially if your family is waiting for dinner at home. Also only do dine in and only if you have plenty of time to wait...
Read moreIn a snapshot, Golden Kingdom makes me reminiscent of the many typical roadside restaurants and night market food stalls you would find in Taiwan. They serve all the Taiwanese classics, from Braised Pork Belly Rice (滷肉飯), Taiwanese Fried Chicken (鹽酥雞) to Pork Ball Soup (貢丸湯) and even Grass Jelly based dessert (仙草). There are many other menu items to try in addition to these, and I recommend the Three Cups Chicken (三杯雞), Kang Pao Chicken (宮保雞) , and Fried Tofu (炸豆腐).
Prices are very reasonable, with most dishes in the $7-$12 range and decently proportionately sized. You can then add a bowl of rice for about a dollar. Great place for coming with some friends or family and sharing a bunch of dishes.
They do offer bubble tea here, although for the price, which is close to $6, the quality is not really there in terms of the consistency of the pearls. You can't beat some Wintermelon tea though.
The only other negative is that sometimes the fried chicken options can be overcooked (a thumbs down from Ms Chen).
Otherwise, this is a place I would be happy to eat at on a semi regular basis, and totally...
