It's nice that the onsen chicken at Mui G Kitchen get to take a "hot spring spa" (marketing speak for sous vide?) enroute to the table cos it makes the meat so tender and juicy to eat!
Couldn't pass up the Hainan chicken rice and was surprised to see a fried version so thought we'd get one of each to compare. The fried comes as a Maryland piece and for me I'd recommend sticking with the non-fried, for which I reckon you get a larger portion of meat.
The chicken rice we received looked different to the menu photos and had been cooked/served with more ingredients - made it nice and flavourful though. The accompanying sides with both dishes complimented the meat and rice well - overall quite enjoyable.
Also tried the seven spice crispy squid tentacles that I've seen other people recommend. This is indeed pretty delicious however I thought the portion was on the small side given the price.
Ordering is at the counter, where there's also some self service water available. The eatery plays a Cantopop soundtrack and can get quite noisy echo-y when busy. There's a 1.5% card surcharge, no Amex/Diners, and a cash discount of I think 3%, which saved us $1.20 on our total bill.
Our order: Hainan chicken with chicken rice, $15.90 Hainan fried chicken with chicken rice, $15.90 Seven spice crispy squid tentacles, $10
I never got to try this place before they overhauled their menu to focus on onsen chicken and noodle dishes, which I kinda regret. Definitely coming back for more of the poached chicken though!
P.S. dig their 'rooster' crockery - gives it some old school charm if you're familiar with seeing such...

Read moreWas a little upset about the change in menu. Was looking forward to eating the stuff we used to order.
The onsen chicken probably means they do it the traditional way of cooking it off heat. That means boil the stock, turn off the heat and let the chicken cook. Takes a bit longer.. But definitely better chicken. So chicken was good.
The rice wasn't that great unfortunately.. My daughter who loves chicken rice, didn't want to eat it... It had a strange taste. Definitely can have a better flavour. Chilli sauce and pickles were nice. The ginger sauce was terrible. I look forward to eating ginger sauce with my chicken rice.. We didn't really touch it. It was the same thing as their "sand ginger" sauce my wife ordered. Too many spices - should do a classic ginger shallot sauce.
The honey butter chicken was great.. Always nicely balanced.
The ran out of the squid which was sad.
The surprise dish of the day was the shredded chicken (using the left overs I guess) and jellyfish noodles in shallot oil. This was a special. It was very delicious.
All in all still a good meal.. But nothing fantastic any more. Miss the old...
