Unfortunately we were underwhelmed by our first visit to Pepe’s. The service was ok, although at times slow, but staff were very friendly, just didn’t seem to want to be there. It was a fairly busy night, but there were plenty of free tables half way through our sitting. We had to constantly try and get the attention of the staff for service and drinks.
We didn’t wait too long for our meals though and they all came out together which was great, but our food definitely lacked flavour. Some of the portions were small while others seemed larger for pretty much the same thing and same price, so there was inconsistency there.
I ordered a seafood Burrito which was supposed to have prawns and scallops, but there were no scallops. It was swimming in more of a cheese sauce, rather than a garlic sauce as offered and it was bland. Some lemon or more salt may have helped. I ended up adding salt myself to give it flavour.
For those saying it’s the best Mexican in Brisbane, you must not get out much, because out of 6 of us, we all agreed the food was lacking flavour and weren’t overly impressed. I hate to say it, but I’ve actually eaten food with more flavour from Guzman Gomez. I would’ve chatted to the staff about our meals if somebody had even asked how our dinner was. No interest at all and were waiting for people to leave so they could go home. It was 9.30 on a Saturday night, so not a crazy time. There was also a mix up with our bill at the end. It had items on it that nobody at our table had eaten. Such a shame because we had been looking forward to our...
Read moreVisited on a busy Saturday night without a booking, which was nice of them to accommodate us.
Cool Mexican atmosphere with genuine friendly Mexcian/Spain staff and fairly fast service.
Sangria was pretty good and was advised it was made in house, perhaps could have had a little more punch and fruit and less sweet.
Entree (Jalapeño Poppers) came out fairly fast before the drinks. Jalapeños were small but full of flavour with a sweet chilli jam for dipping to top it off.
The Sizzling Seafood Fajitas for the main was well presented well and tasted quite nice with a decent amount of prawns, scallops and veggies, and a generous amount of sides to share between two or three people if you plan to have more entrees or a dessert. The flavours of the tomato based sauce was ok, was missing a little more herbs and spice, as it did state it was a spicy dish, but spice was missing.
Suggestion would be to have 2 spicy sauces per table for people to help themselves.
Overall, this was a great venue and has made it to second place on my list of the top 5 Mexican in Brisbane and surrounds. We'll be back with some friends in the...
Read moreDecided to try again after a previous, not so good experience with the food. Our poppers had been reheated in the microwave, were cold in the middle and soggy. Queso was nice but cold and accompanying corn chips were stale and soft. Ok, was early on a Wednesday, so most likely leftovers from the previous day reheated. We decided to pass on mains. The young waiter was extremely attentive and picked up there was problem. He didn’t charge for either entree, so we didn’t feel cheated and decided it was just bad timing, No harm done. That good turn was very quickly undone by the extremely rude, waitress on the upstairs bar, around 6.30pm. My husband has a disability from a car accident and military service and walks with a bad limp, she decided this and the fact that we’re both carrying a bit of weight was something to mock and laugh about with the old bar fly who was holding up the bar. When asked if there was a problem, she sarcastically smiled and said no. Immediately mocking us the minute she thought we were out of sight and hearing. She needs a serious amount of retraining before being let loose with...
