I’m so confused why this place rates so high (especially with Wynnum locals on Facebook). It is terrible value for money, poor quality food, and just.. well…terrible all round really. After a birthday celebration here for my son tonight, there is nothing pleasant I can say about this restaurant at all. I have avoided it since it was established as the venue name seemed all too knowingly an indication of how poorly the food would present. It was really expensive and I especially hate paying big prices when the food is bad. We had 3 different cuts of beef, and requested all steaks be cooked medium rare. The Rump came out rare. It was chewy and gristly & almost completely inedible. I watched my strong, 23 year old struggling to slice through a piece with his cutlery. Picking up a chunk he couldn’t even tear off a bite with his teeth and left half the steak on the plate. The Eye fillet was served medium, was cold, and had no flavour like it had been recently defrosted. The Porterhouse came to the table well done, The one waitress serving was friendly enough but when I looked into the kitchen, staff were all very young and seemed stressed. This place also serves Indian dishes, and was fully staffed by Indian girls. On the way home we discussed that maybe we should have ordered curries but I see in some other reviews that they are not great either. I’m pretty sure I have had a better meal at Hungry Jacks (at least you get what you pay for there). Just avoid this place….we definitely won’t...
Read moreMy wife and I had a good time tonight at Mates. I was in two minds about going as I had a chicken burger there not long ago which was ok but not great compared to the city restaurants I am used to. The venue is also large with a lot of hard surfaces and previous owners have struggled to give it a welcoming vibe. This time though Cody J Miller was putting on a live performance and our table was near the stage. He sung a variety of classics that suited the clientele and surprisingly it wasn't too loud either despite being close to full capacity. So overall I was very happy with the atmosphere. I had the parmigiana and my wife had the eye fillet with mushroom sauce. I'd say place your order on the rarer side of what you want in order to get steak cooked to your satisfaction, but it was a good cut well prepared. The parma was also really quite good. It included a slice of ham and came with salad and chips. My only compliant if I have one at all was that I had trouble getting through the whole serving. Service was a little slow, but again overall a great night with great food and a great atmosphere. I look forward...

Most diverse food choice in town Menu with style and variety Asian, curries, seafood, steaks. The menu changes with the seasons. Risotto, pasta, salads- but all with a difference. Food was fabulous. Hot and fresh. No caterers pack flat crumbed prawns here. Lovely juice prawns in light crisp batter. Nicely cooked vegetables with good flavour. Quality furniture and appropriate lighting. Table and bar service very friendly and polite.. Clean and well provisioned toilets. Loved it!! Certainly would recommend this as a bar or restaurant for lunch, drinks or dinner! Get along it's the...
