My husband and I came here for my birthday dinner yesterday, and the restaurant made a great first impression. The lady seating tables was really friendly and polite and so was our waiter. The music was fantastic and the ambience was spot on. We ordered the green chilli margaritas which were an absolute. But sadly for us it all pretty much ended there...for starters the menu had no dishes of real substance for a full dinning meal it kind of needs more orrrr the dish was too large (for example the nasu dengaku, which I'll get to in a bit).
Here a run down of the food we ordered: the snapper tartar (which should be described as that not just by the waiter fyi). Bland bland bland!!! The most prominent flavour was the scallion garnish...No flavour AT ALL! I didn't get it and the waiter was selling dish to every table i could see 😆. Kingfish - fishy, too thick and bland bland bland! Where was the ponzu in that dish. All i got was fishy olive oil... crispy chicken skin - again hardly any seasoning and so thick that each bite felt like a mouthful of oil. Don't get me started on the mayo dip 😶. finally had to ask for more dishes to come as we couldn't eat the chicken skin and were starving. So out came the skewers which the waiter insisted was the only that wasn't a share item. WRONG! You absolutely can share a skewer firstly. We got the scallop skewer - two large ones come on a stick. That is sharable. Again loaded with only butter and no seasoning - i barely ate half of mine. My husband had to eat the rest after requesting some lemon... The next skewer to come was the mushroom - This was a delight!! Lovely mushrooms with a great bite to them, served with a delish sauce. We mopped that up in seconds. Although we were tempted to order more, we were scared of the wait time so decided against it. next come were toragashi fries - where was the toragashi? And honestly how can you stuff fries up?!?!? But they did, they weren't crispy at all. Soggy fries! I couldn't believe it because my husband suggested we leave before they came and ask to cancel the rest of the order, but i insisted we stay because we were so hungry and that there was no way they could stuff up fries and nasu dengaku. Oh was i wrong! the nasu dengaku was probably the worst dish of the night (in par with the chicken skins). Firstly it was massive and thick!! Hardly any miso paste in it (there was more with mushrooms!). Again all we got was the garnish. Husband even sorry to say had to spit his bite out...
Such a disappointment given the hype around this restaurant. I really think you need to take a better look at what you're offer your clients...brisbanes food scene is still young but it's improved from this bland unbalanced stuff...
I do apologise for the harsh review but I'm so frustrated by lemming affect in brisbane of people blindly following others just because a restaurant is new and trendy. New doesn't always mean good. And just because everyone's going there, again doesn't mean it's good. Form your own opinions and stop recommending bad food because it's...

Following a stellar chef's table experience at Baja, we eagerly took head chef Julius's recommendation to try Ruby My Dear in Newstead – and once again, his guidance was spot on! This spot is a resounding yes on all fronts.
Nestled in what can only be described as Brisbane's best suburb, Ruby My Dear boasts a trendy, moody, and intimately dark interior. The atmosphere is perfectly curated with chill beats spun by a live DJ, creating an ideal backdrop for their excellent Japanese-influenced menu.
Let's talk drinks. Ruby My Dear serves up one of the best margaritas I've ever had, a delightful concoction infused with green chili. My only regret was driving, as I could have easily indulged in several more.
The menu offers a fantastic mix of small snacks and small to large dishes, each bursting with truly exquisite flavors. Standout moments included the crispy school prawns, the incredibly flavorful kangaroo tartare, and the surprisingly delicious eggplant sando.
To top it all off, the service was genuinely lovely, making the entire experience a delight.
Five stars without a doubt! If Julius from Baja recommends it, you know you're in for a treat, and Ruby My Dear absolutely delivers. We can't...
