Okay, with a name like Grease Monkey (though it is undoubtedly cool) and a menu mostly comprised of burgers and pizza, I really wasn't expecting much. What a wonderful surprise this place turned out to be!
Grease Monkey was recommended to us as a young-teen-friendly lunch spot, and the teen was thrilled with the menu options and taste of their meal. In our group of six, everyone enjoyed their meap immensely, and each of us ordered something unique. I can honestly say that before this visit, I've never enjoyed every bite of a burger. Ever. Their chicken parm(-y? -a? -igiana?) burger changed that! My goodness, every bit of it was delicious. I don't know who decided that mozzerella sticks belong on a burger, but they were so right. Also, one member of our party said she doesn't like fries much and usually only eats a couple, but she ate them all this time, to her own great surprise.
The atmosphere at GM is also wonderful. Space heaters in the ceiling keep the open- air dining space cosy, and the PLANTS, oh my, absolute heaven.
The only downside of the whole experience was the service aspect. Don't get me wrong - every staff member was so friendly and helpful and every other good thing. Call me old fashioned, but when I go out to a restaurant to catch up with someone, I don't really want to be on my phone looking at the menu/ordering, or lining up at a bar to order the food with half the party sitting around waiting. Then, getting cutlery, condiments, etc for everyone. Basically, if mom goes out to eat she wants to sit and relax and have it taken care of, not feel like she's still on the clock. But again I need to emphasize that the wait staff themselves were terrific, and very friendly.
Overall, I'm glad GM isn't in my hometown, or I'd be tempted to eat there...
Read moreI am from WA. Last week i was in Canberra for a 2 day business trip. On Friday night , my business partner and i stumbled across Grease Monkey in Braddon. We immediately felt a good atmosphere on arrival. We scored the best high table , with a heater on either side and good views of the many tv screens , to watch the football. We both got a really delicious burger and chips. Feeling full , we went back to our hotel for an early night. When i woke up on Saturday morning , i went to buy a coffee , but i couldn't find my wallet. I turned the hotel room upside down , but it wasn't there. Next , i searched the car , but still couldn't find it. I looked up Grease Monkey on the net , but they don't open until 11am on Saturday and that was still 3 hours away , so i went for a walk. I called Grease Monkey at 11am and i was told by a very pleasant guy named Rocco , that they had my wallet there. Rocco said he would leave it with the bar staff for me to collect. Later that day , we drove back to Grease Monkey. As i was driving , my mate Simon ran in to pick up my wallet. I told him that if it has any cash in it , then offer $50 as a reward. When he came back with the wallet , he said the 2 young bar staff were thrilled with the $50 and that one of them was actually the one who found it. The entire contents of my wallet were untouched. I am now back at home in Perth. All of our experiences in Canberra were pleasant. We had multiple dealings with people , who just went the extra yard to help. However , the overall positive experience that we received from Grease Monkey , was second to none.
To the young barman who found my wallet and i didn't even get your name - Thank you. To everyone else i had dealings with in Canberra...

If you're into the deep pan stuff from the pizza chains or if you're into focaccia, and you haven't heard of Detroit style pizza yet, let this be your polite introduction because you'll love it! I was first introduced to Detroit style square cut pizza by the homie @howac back when he used to run @squareduppizza from home. "Sydney's most hard to get pizza" they used to say. And yeah, the man's from Detroit would you believe it? Anyway, besides I low rightfully tooting his own horn because his pizzas were great, he didn't think much of the other Detroit-style slices in town at the time. This led me on a quest out of town to look for more. Taa daa! This is Grease Monkey, multiple stores in Canberra, serving drinks, burgers and "American-style pizzas" they call it. The Happy dough is crispy, chewy, bubbly, well-hydrated I suppose. The best thing about Detroit-style is that delightful cheese crust that forms on each edge as the cheese melts down the side of the pan. You'll see what I mean! We ordered the Motor City with lemon chicken, pork and fennel sausage and coriander pesto, and the Supreme (haw haw, Supreme never fails mc) with a generous ladle of red...
