We’ve dined at Greenfields many times in the past and have often recommended the restaurant to friends and family. However, following our experience at the recent "Christmas in July" event, we regret to say we won’t be returning — nor will we continue to recommend it.
The event was offered across two sittings, at 5pm and 7pm. We booked the 7pm sitting for a group of six. Arriving slightly early, we were happy to have a drink at the bar while we waited — no issue there. Once seated, however, it felt like our table was overlooked for some time. We weren’t offered water or entrees until a fair while later, though they did eventually arrive.
The menu suggested fresh bread and butter followed by a traditional prawn cocktail. While the bread was apparently available at the buffet, it was never offered at the table, and the prawn cocktail was extremely disappointing. The prawns were small, watery, and cut in half (perhaps to give the illusion of a larger portion), served on a few shreds of lettuce with thin, watery sauce and a tasteless avocado purée. It felt like little care had gone into it.
Things went further downhill at the buffet. The ham and turkey were processed and folded, the vegetables were mushy and overcooked, and the roast potatoes barely resembled anything roasted. Given we were at the later sitting, we expected the buffet to be refreshed — but this wasn’t the case. It felt like we were being served leftovers from earlier. The food had clearly been sitting out for too long, and even if it had been fresher, the quality was poor. Frankly, I’ve had better roast dinners at the local RSL — and that’s not a comparison one would expect for a themed event.
The selection of vegetables was underwhelming (pumpkin, carrot, and onion), with no sprouts, parsnips, or anything particularly festive. I support seasonal eating, but this lacked any sense of occasion.
The desserts were largely brought in and underwhelming, lacking flavour and presentation. There was no signage to indicate what any of them were. One sponge cake was sitting in a warmer but was still cold — as was the custard it was served with.
Adding to the disappointment, the staff began packing away the buffet before we had even gotten to the dessert, creating a rushed atmosphere. Clearing plates while guests were still eating only reinforced this feeling. If there’s going to be a later sitting, there should be an appropriate level of service maintained through to the end — not a sense of being hurried out.
At $49 per head, this was incredibly disappointing — and we would have raised our concerns on the night had any staff checked in with us. Unfortunately, they seemed far more focused on packing up than checking how guests were enjoying the evening. Judging by other reviews, we weren’t the only ones left dissatisfied.
I just hope the tafe students learn that it was a perfect example of how NOT to run a function -...
Read moreMy group and I had the pleasure of dining at Green Fields Bar and Restaurant and I must say it was an absolutely delightful experience from start to finish.
Upon entering the establishment, I was immediately struck by the warm and inviting ambiance. The interior was tastefully decorated with warm tones, creating a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. The seating arrangement was comfortable, and the lighting was just right, adding to the overall wonderful ambiance.
The student staff at Green Fields Bar and Restaurant were exceptional. From the moment I walked in, they greeted me with genuine smiles and made me feel welcome. The waitstaff was attentive, knowledgeable, and provided excellent service throughout my meal. They were quick to offer suggestions and cater to any dietary restrictions I had, ensuring that my dining experience was tailored to my preferences.
Now onto the highlight of the evening - the food. The menu at Green Fields Bar and Restaurant boasted a wide range of dishes, each with its own unique twist. Whether you're a fan of seafood, steak, pasta, or vegetarian options, there is something for everyone. I opted for their lovely Eye Fillet Steak, which was cooked to perfection. Tender and Juicy, cooked exactly how I wanted it, it was truly a flavor explosion in every bite. The accompanying side dishes were equally impressive, with fresh and vibrant ingredients that complemented the main dish perfectly.
In addition to its mouth-watering menu, Green Fields Bar and Restaurant also offers a well-curated selection of wines, mocktails, and cocktails. Their students are crafting creative and delicious concoctions that tantalize the taste buds. I would highly recommend trying one of their specialty cocktails, as they are truly a work of art.
Overall, Green Fields Bar and Restaurant provides a dining experience that is unparalleled. The combination of exceptional service, stunning ambiance, and mouth-watering food. These students will go far! We will definitely be...
Read moreI'm giving it a 4/5 bse previous times I've been here it has been lovely, but not today. We came for the Xmas in july lunch, staff lovely, no reservations on that, but the food was less than average, which is unusual for here. The starter; deconstruction prawn cocktail..cutting the prawns in half to assume bigger portions???? Then I think it was avocado puree, so tastless, it looked like little dots of wasabi, would have been much better with wasabi. 3 salad choices, fruit, then buffet mains. Eggplant parmigiana had no wow. Root veg standard, but the processed ham was abysmal!! This is a tafe teaching kitchen. Teach the students how to bone a leg ham and perfectly thin slice! There is no excuse for processed ham. Even free range ham on the bone is not that expensive wholesale and sliced thin. Biggest disappointment . Rolls were lovely. Unfortunately the desserts were lack lustre, no definite taste. Presented beautifully, but that's where it ended. The slivered almond square'cake' : mush, the gorgeous cups that held the 'raspberry' 3 layer.. ..no taste, raspberry lacked tart, middle wasn't a fan, but the bottom was like soggy cake. I never leave food ever, but left this sorry . The lemon meringue tart was cute. Do u guys make the tart shells? And lastly the sticky date, the jugs for custard and toffee sauce are inappropriate. The staff apologised and said the sauces were just thick which is why it was hard to pour. The poor lady ahead gave the jug a bit of a jiggle then her whole plate was swamped with toffee sauce!!! The sauces were lovely but let down by their carriers. Above everything, the ham really let ths down. Your normal menus are so refined and meticulous, xmas in july not so. Many thanks to beautiful...
