Redland Bayside News restaurant review: 27 February 2025
On my recent visit to Hog’s Breath Café at Raby Bay, I decided to treat myself to something truly indulgent—the iconic 18-hour slow-cooked Prime Rib, paired with a serving of garlic prawns.
I’ve heard so much about this dish, and after one bite, I understood exactly why it has such a legendary reputation.
Let’s start with the Prime Rib.
Cooked to perfection, medium-rare, as I requested, the meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender.
You can truly taste the love and care that goes into slow cooking it for 18 hours.
Every slice was juicy, flavourful, and perfectly seasoned.
It’s clear that Hog’s Breath Café takes great pride in serving up the finest beef, and this dish is a testament to their commitment to quality.
But then, there were the garlic prawns.
They were simply divine.
Plump and succulent, each prawn was bathed in a rich garlic butter sauce that brought a luxurious depth of flavour.
The garlic wasn’t overpowering—just the right amount to complement the sweetness of the prawns.
Together with the Prime Rib, the prawns added a perfect burst of freshness and an extra layer of indulgence to an already outstanding meal.
To wash it all down, I took the opportunity to try one of their craft beers from the extensive selection.
The smooth, crisp taste of a 4 Pines was the perfect complement to the richness of the steak.
And if cocktails are more your style, you’re in luck—Hog’s Breath Café also serves up a variety of expertly mixed cocktails, with over 50 options to choose from.
Whether you're sipping on a refreshing gin and tonic or something a little stronger, the drink options elevate the whole dining experience.
But there’s so much more to Hog’s Breath Café than just a great meal.
It’s a welcoming space for everyone.
The family and dog-friendly outdoor area makes it easy to enjoy a meal with loved ones or bring your furry friend along.
On Sunday afternoons, when I visited, the café transforms with live music, creating the perfect vibe for relaxing with friends or family over drinks and great food.
Plus, there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, ensuring everyone can find something to enjoy.
If you’re looking for a venue to host a celebration or special gathering, you’ll be pleased to know that Hog’s Breath Café has ample space for functions, big or small.
Whether it’s a casual get-together or a more formal event, they can cater to your needs and make sure everything...
Read moreIt's interesting when you visit these mainstream establishments (if interesting is the right word to use). There is a good choice of meals and they are usually done quite well. So the food is pretty good (not GREAT, but definitely good). What I do find interesting is the staff. Now, I know these mainstream establishments have usually got good business plans and generally know how to make ends meet. Our table staff were pleasant enough, but just lacked that little bit of maturity and professionalism. I mean, the average age was about 18 I reckon. I wasn't expecting the world, I just didn't want our drinks just dropped on our table so they splashed (explains the often sticky tables though) and the meals with fingerprints all over the plates (there are jerms and covid is a real thing) and just dropped on the edge of the table so you had to reach and grab them yourself (probably couldn't slide them as the table was too sticky anyway). Like I said, just lacked a little professionalism. I am glad we had the waitstaff we did have though. There was one you fella that looked lost and kept running his hands through his hair and scratching his nuts, that if he had have dropped out plates on the table with fingerprints all over them, I would have asked for new meals.(coulda had more than covid on those ones) lol Anyhooooo.... I rant. Meals were good, environment was good, service was good (ish)... And value is what you'd expect.. Was good.... And I guess, that is all you can expect from these bigger restaurants. Pork out plate wasn't bad. Have included a pic. Lots of sauce (maybe a little too much) and good portion. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Good, convenient......
Read moreHad the brisket burger wish I hadn't, not a very good meal, clearly rushed and hastily put together, the brisket was slathered in bbq sauce in an attempt to cover up lackluster meat that should shine on its own, let's not even get into how my curly fries tasted like urine how does that happen, what happened there? Was it dropped and re-plated? was it dunked in the urinals for extra flavour? My partner had loaded skins which could have basically been cheese and precut Woolworths bacon on a piece of cardboard fried and served with half a container of sour cream. One friend had crumbed mushrooms and avocado the photos are of the mushrooms which are more batter than mushroom. Clearly the kitchen staff haven't figured out that more batter does not equate good food, but what is one to expect from what is essentially a pub menu (and I'm being harsh on pubs here) with exorbitant pricing, better food can be had at you local with more care put into your plate. The restaurant itself is well presented with a nice atmosphere if you enjoy screaming across tables at one another and ordering overpriced beer from bar staff that are just competent enough to acquire an RSA. I dislike coming here and always order the most minimal thing so as not to have worry if I'll be dying on the toilet the next day. Overall it's lackluster and not good, take a person here to break up that way one of you can cry for the break up and the other the food. I give the second star for the fact I am drunk while writing this review to get over the fact...
