Gepetto's Hahndorf — Restaurant in Hahndorf

Don’t dine here. In such a beautiful town this place serves ok food but with the most terrible service.

We sat at 6pm. Mains came out at 7:50pm. Table next to us had 3 couples eat, pay and go before we got our mains as a group of 4.

We were patient. Oysters and potatoes that came at 6:30pm were ok then absolutely nothing but the odd drink service. The manager (maybe the owner) came up and struggled with his own Coravin wine system for a while but overall the lack of food coming to us whilst other tables were being served and left whilst initially amusing became a joke by 7:30pm.

Once I asked about our mains they came 20 minutes later. Pizza chef might need to train on actually slicing a pizza as ours arrived in all different shapes and sizes that we had to go ahead and knife through ourselves.

Mains when they turned up. Barramundi was good, gnocchi was ok. The seafood risotto was Rubber seafood and undercooked rice. I told the manager who came back, told me I was wrong and that the chef was right in saying it’s perfect and al dente…..

This was the last straw. I told them how bad the wait was to which at 8:05pm he told me I only ordered mains 50 minutes ago (7:15pm apparently an hour and 15 minutes after we sat down)

Then I said that’s enough, we start to leave. He comps his 25 year perfect chef’s seafood rubber to us then proceeds to tell me we ordered our mains at 6:40pm (so now an hour and 10 minutes and not 50 minutes….??) as if this was some kind of point. Claims of its busy etc….. we got there at 6pm with 3 other tables around and our orders were in well before the restaurant filled. So bad excuses and clearly the staff or the kitchen screwed up and this manager wouldn’t own it.

Check the bad reviews of this place. The guy doesn’t own anything when someone complains.

We went up to leave and pay having had enough of this manager that couldn’t own anything.

Guy wanted a fight and his chef is perfect and it was all our fault etc. Incompetent management, service was poor. Half the food was alright but stay away. Head to the Hahndorf Inn or German Arms or anywhere but here. They’ll treat you better than this place will.

Wait for the “customer is wrong” rebuttal below in the same tone he gave us tonight.

Additional: The response from the “owner” is case in point.

Expect this weak response anytime the owner is told the truth. The “scene” being the manager (not his staff, the manager alone) being told at payment what bollocks he was talking about his 25 year chef being undisputed despite cooking a seafood rubber risotto after 1 hour 20 minutes about as bland as his weak response. Read the honest...

I’m very sorry. I do not like to leave reviews because i know what they mean but this time i hope we can help the owners. I’m italian. I’ve been living in Australia since 10 years. I went there Sunday the 20 of march. I had a lot of expectations after following this place on the social media. I visited Gepetto (with one P only, weird) with the previous management and was very good. Unfortunately this time we found a very expensive restaurant with an average quality of food. 28 dollars for a Margherita in an electric oven which makes domino’s style pizza honesty is offensive for the customers. The pizza looks like the one you cook at home, like a biscuit. Sorry. I was very disappointed. If you pay so much the product must be special and it wasn’t at all. My wife had the fish of the day. A small piece of barramundi (probably 200g) with a salad on the side without any kind of dressing (43 dollars). Probably the antipasto was the only good part of the meal. We finished with one serve of cannoli to share. My 2 kids had one garlic focaccia and one Margherita. One bottle of wine for 56 dollars and one spritz. Total for 2 adult and 2 kids 270 dollars. A part of this we had our dessert with 4 smokers customers near our table. My kids were eating smelling the smoke of the cigarettes. Very very bad. We told our waiter and he said he could do nothing because we were outside. I don’t mind spending money for great experiences but this time i left very upset feeling bad to had just wasted almost 300 dollars. For this price you can have fantastic experiences of fine dining in many places in the city. The quality of the ingredients i had this night doesn’t explain a so high cost of the meals and many of the wines in the list are over priced. Again. I’m very sorry about it but we’ll not come back. We wanted to go out for a nice meal, something better then what we can make at home.. something healthy because we have allergies, and sensitivities to processed food. Eddie, Adi and Alvaro looked after us. so easily GF options no worries.. ask Any questions about dietary requirements and they know Thier dishes!!! absolutely delicious meals! We had the muscles will have them again!! Yum And the steak of the day, cooked perfectly✨ And a GF granchio to share... Probably didn't need all that but the flavour and the fun was such a buzz!! Too full for desert, for myself but my daughter loved hers, she had panacotta yum!!! Amazing wine list... Would like to work my way through that hahaa.. Local and exotic wines. Even just the experience of the wine glasses!! Like so classy!!! Generous people, generous portions, felt very cared about and important to them.

Authentic family business , classy place.. Live music!!!! Wasn't expecting that,we just booked a table and were entertained with funky tunes and personalised music like one table had happy birthday sang to them... so much fun. All the staff sang and the whole restaurant light up and joined im... so fun! We were well tended to all night!!! Oh and the seats!!!! Seriously!!! So comfortable.. more comfortable then our own home table and chairs!! Nothing at all to complain about!! Even the toilets are clean and are scented nicely... Honestly!! An amazing experience. And I'm fussy.. if things are dirty, or annoying (like atmosphere) I'll pick up on it and it would make me want to leave... This place.. not like that at all!! Very very clean!!! Atmosphere awesome..

You guys are providing an absolute pleasure of an experience and we will be back for our special occasions or when we can't be bothered cooking haha Thanks again for a refreshing up lifting experience that carried into our week 5...
