Deep South Brewing Co. — Restaurant in Hobart

Had an awful first experience recently with a staff member there and do not think I'd ever go back :( ordered a gluten free pizza (for a coeliac sufferer) but it came out as regular wheat. When we let the waitress know that we ordered GF she argued with us that she "didn't think" we had ordered it that way, and THEN told us that if we wanted a gluten free pizza that we could actually eat, we would have to pay again (and the wheat pizza was taken back to the kitchen). It was a choice of either paying again, or not having any food at all (and the rest of our table was already eating). Really sad to have had this experience as it wasn't just a "change of mind", but a serious dietary requirement. Haven't been able to get back in touch this week to speak to the owner at a good time, but really sad it happened and hope it doesn't happen to anyone else with...

I spent just over a week in Hobart during Dark Mofo and I hit just about every brewpub and craft beer bar in the city and slightly beyond - as far as Brewlab northward, Last Rites east, Preachers southernmost, and even the elusive Captain Blighs amongst many in the city and North Hobart.

I reckon Deep South had my favourite beers on average. I had the XPA and the Sharksjaw IPA, and both were simply excellent. Not to say I didn't have some food and interesting ones elsewhere. But when I think of everywhere I visited I can't remember coming away from any of them thinking I'd had two or more...

This place is great, provided you treat it as a brewery and not a restaurant. They have a great range of beers and will usually let you taste before buying. Their pizzas are very popular and their chicken and beef are delicious. That said, they are more substantial snacks than a true meal. They do have vegetable dishes, but most of their protein dishes do not have veggies or salad. Their chips are only average.
